Gary Perez

Gary Perez (born April 12, 1962) is an award-nominated[1][2] American television, film, and stage actor. He is of Puerto Rican descent and considers himself a Nuyorican.

Early Life

Gary was born in Mount Sinai Hospital to parents born in Puerto Rico. He was raised in the Lincoln Projects of Harlem, then moved to the Clason Point section of The Bronx in New York City.

Early Career

Perez began his career doing off-broadway theater at INTAR, where he got cast in Luis Santeiro's OUR LADY OF THE TORTILLA, directed by Max Ferra. As Max liked Gary, he gave him the keys to INTAR's other space, INTAR 2[3], located on 52nd St in NYC. Intar 2 would later become the original home of Latino Actors Base[4][5][6] founded by Perez, along with John Ortiz, David Deblinger, and Paul Calderon. Latino Actors Base[7][8][9], later became known as The LAByrinth Theater Company[10][11].

Perez first got onto television sets in the soap opera world with As The World Turns[12] (1995-2002), where he recurred as Detective Ramirez. Later he'd go on to play on Cosby[13], New York Undercover[14], NYPD Blue[15], and Third Watch[16]. He was cast by Spike Lee in Crooklyn[17] and got to play opposite Frank Langella in the film Cry baby Lane. Later he got to do recurring roles on acclaimed shows such as The Sopranos[18][19] as FBI Agent Marquez[20] and on another HBO hit OZ,[21] as the head of the parole board, Luis Ruiz[22].

Theater

With his roots still firmly planted in the theater world, he has garnered many theater credits. Gary made his Broadway debut in 2023 with the play - Between Riverside and Crazy [23] by, Stephen Adly Guirgis. Directed by Austin Pendleton, at the Helen Hayes Theater, playing LT. Dave Caro. Other cast members include, Stephen Mckinley Henderson, Elizabeth Canavan, Rosal Colon, Common, and Maria-Christina Oliveras. He has worked with many top writers, including Pulitzer Prize winners - John Patrick Shanley[24], Nilo Cruz[25][26], Lynn Nottage[27], and Stephen Adly Guirgis[28]. He has also worked with multiple award-winning directors Anna D. Shapiro[29], Tony Taccone in Jose Rivera's Cloud Tectonics[30], Brian Kulick[31], and Jo Bonney[32][33] at such theaters as Steppenwolf[34], Yale Rep[35] in yet another Jose Rivera play Boleros for the Disenchanted[36], Second Stage Theater[37][38], McCarter Theater[39], La Jolla Playhouse[40], Berkeley Repertory Theatre[41], New York Theater Workshop[42] and The Public Theater[43]. Perez was nominated for a JEFF Award[44] for his portrayal of Cousin Julio in Steppenwolf's historic first all-Latino cast of The Mother Fucker with the Hat - directed by Anna D. Shapiro.

Television & Film

More recently, Gary has aimed more toward working in front of the camera, doing the film Illegal Tender[45] and a lead role opposite friend Florencia Lozano in Life After You[46].

In addition, he has many Guest Star roles shows such as Without a Trace[47], N3mbers[48][49], The Unit, Lie to Me, Prime Suspect, Awake, The Closer, Person of Interest, NCIS: Los Angeles, Madam Secretary, Chicago PD, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, Blue Bloods, Homeland, New Amsterdam, Law & Order: SVU, Instinct, Prodigal Son, Tommy[50], Little America, The Resident and a more recent showing on Law & Order as Judge Bolden[51].

Some notable television appearances have been recurring roles on 13 Reasons Why as Arturo Padilla[52], The Last Ship, The Blacklist, City on a Hill, and just wrapped (upcoming TV series) Fatal Attraction for Paramount Plus, as Rolando Cabral[53] opposite Joshua Jackson.
