Dr. Vincent G. Kokich (September 17th, 1944 - June 24th, 2013) is an American Orthodontist known for his lifelong contributions to the field of Orthodontics. [1] He served as a faculty in the Orthodontics Department of University of Washington School of Dentistry. He held positions of President of both American Board of Orthodontics and American Academy of Esthetic Dentistry.
Life
[edit]Dr. Kokich grew up in Tacoma, Washington after his birth in 1944. Vince was known to be an Accordion player and sing Croatian folk songs. He attended Lowell Elementary School, Mason Middle School and Stadium High School respectively. He completed his undergraduate degree from University of Puget Sound. Dr. Kokich received his Dental Degree in 1971 from University of Washington School of Dentistry . He then received his Masters in Science and his Orthodontic Certificate from University of Washington School of Dentistry in 1974. [2]
He died on June 24th, 2013 due to a heart attach at the age of 68. He is survived by his wife, Marilyn, of more than 40 years and their son Dr. Vincent O. Kokich, who is also an Orthodontist. [3]
Career
[edit]During his tenure as Editor in Chief of the American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics he oversaw an overhaul of the journal. Some of the changes included introducing many different sections such as: Point/Counterpoint, Ethics in Orthodontics, Statistics and Research Design and Case Report of the month. Dr. Kokich during his career in Orthodontics wrote 21 book chapters, 84 scientific articles, 48 review articles, and 32 editorials for the AJO-DO.[4][5] He received many awards such as ICO Award (2001), Schluger Award (2000), Strang Award (1994), Dewel Award (2002), AAED President’s Award for Teaching Excellence (2004), the 2005 Association Trends Bronze Award for Education Programs, and the 2005 Distinguished Alumnus Award from the University of Washington School of Dentistry.
