A royal consort is the spouse of a ruling Sultan of Selangor. Consorts of monarchs in Selangor and its predecessors have no constitutional status or power but many had significant influence over their spouse. Some royal consorts, such as current consort Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin, have also helped to enhance the image of the Monarchy by becoming celebrities in their own right. They can be styled Tengku Ampuan if the consort is of royal birth or Tengku Permaisuri if she is a commoner. There has been a titled consort since the establishment of Selangor in 1766.

The consort of the Sultan, since the times of Salehuddin of Selangor has been a titled office in the state of Selangor. They have always held either the title of Tengku Ampuan or Tengku Permaisuri. There has been 12 conosrts with 9 holding the title of Tengku Ampuan and 3 have held the title of Tengku Permaisuri. The first holder was the consort of Sultan Salehuddin which was Tengku Ampuan Putri.
Exceptions[edit]
The office has had its vacancies. The last vacancy was during the reign of Sharafuddin of Selangor where he ascended the throne as a divorcee and did not have a consort until the 31st of August 2016 where he wed Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin and awarded her the title of Tengku Permaisuri.
