BearVault is a company based in Louisville, Colorado, that designs and manufactures bear resistant food containers for backpackers. BearVault was founded in 2003 to create better solutions for bear canisters in California's Sierra Nevada Mountains. BearVaults are certified by the IGBC or Interagency Grizzly Bear Committee as bear resistant and are approved for use in all locations.[1]
History
[edit]BearVault began testing prototype polycarbonate bear canisters in the fall of 2002. By summer of 2003, the company had a functioning canister, the BV-100 that withstood 48 hours of abuse from two black bears, going beyond the one hour standard for certification.[2] In following years, BearVault refined the design to include smaller models for shorter trips, and new design features to optimize weight to volume ratios, and receive certification from the IGBC.[3] In late 2020 to early 2021 BearVault relocated operations to the Colorado Technology Center business park in Louisville, CO.[4]
Products
[edit]BearVault manufactures a bear canister designed to resist entry from American black bears and grizzly bears. The canisters were initially designed for backpackers but are also heavily used by outdoor participants from a broad set of activities including canoeing, fly fishing, and bike-packing.
