James Dryden earned worldwide acclaim in poultry breeding and egg production in the early 1900's^[1]. He produced the first hen to lay 300 eggs in a year, as well as the first hen to lay 1000 eggs in a lifetime^[2]. Dryden was a professor at Oregon Agricultural College (now Oregon State University) for 15 years, from 1907 to 1922, during which time he authored Poultry Breeding and Management, a book that remains relevant today as a significant resource for open range breeding^[3].
