Akpa River Basin

The Akpa River flows through parts of Nigeria and Cameroon, with an approximately 4860 square kilometers of the total basin area.[1]

The Akpa River flows through Nigeria and Cameroon, 62% of the basin areas are located in Cameroon and the rest 38% belongs to Nigeria. The total population of the basin areas are roughly 160000. [2]

Climate

Since most of the areas of Nigeria and Cameroon are located near the equators, the major climate here are tropical isothermal climate, which has distinct dry season and rainy season, also the annual average temperature are above 18 Celsius.[3]

Discharge and River Usage

The total discharge of Akpa River through this area are close to 11 billion cubic meters per year, nearly 74% of the discharge are contributed by Cameroon and the rest are by Nigeria. Among the basin, the utilization rate are very low. In Cameroon, there are only 60 square kilometers of the 3024 square kilometers covered area are being irrigated.Furthermore, there is currently no any dams or constructions over the river across the basin.
