Amur River Basin[edit]

Introduction[edit]

The Amur River(Chinese: 黑龙江) is located at the border between China and Russia. It has a total basin area of 2.09 million square kilometers that across the Province of Heilongjiang and eastern part of inner Mongolia of northeastern China, part of Russia, the northeastern part of Mongolia and part of North Korea.

Countries and Population[edit]

The Amur River Basin covered approximately 2.09 million square kilometers with 68 million population. The majority of these population are in northeastern China, approximately 64 million and the rest of the population are distributed in Mongolia, eastern part of Russia and North Korea.

Discharge and Water Rights[edit]

The Amur River is one of the largest rivers in the world, with its total length of 1755 miles (2800 kilometers), it has a total basin discharge of 343.9 cubic kilometers,103.2 cubic kilometers of the total discharge belongs to the natural rights of the water and the basin human rights are 116 cubic kilometers.

Climates[edit]

The covered area of Amur River Basin are dominated by Humid Continental Climate, which means a warm and short summer but long lasting and cold winter. For example, the city of Harbin: the mean temperature in July is 23 Celsius (73.4 Fahrenheit), but only -18.5 Celsius (1.1 Fahrenheit) in January.

The most popular economic activity of Amur River Basin is agriculture.The nutrient-enriched black soils are best suited for the growth of crops such as rice and wheat.In China, the croplands at Amur River Basin accounts 16% of the total agricultural lands, which makes agriculture as one of the most important activities in northeastern part of China. In Mongolia, the livestock breeding is still one of the most important economic activities. However, in Russia, the land cannot completely meet the local agricultural needs.

Water Conflicts[edit]

As seen, the most populated part of Amur River Basin is the eastern part of Inner Mongolia and Heilongjiang Province in China. Thereby, this area experiences the most stressful water shortage than other parts of the region.
