Primatene Mist

Primatene Mist is an over-the-counter epinephrine metered-dose inhaler (bronchodilator) for the temporary relief of bronchial asthma symptoms. Manufactured by Armstrong Pharmaceuticals, Primatene Mist is scheduled to be discontinued [1] under order of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer (1987) mandates that the U.S. phase out all products that use cloroflorocarbons (CFCs). As a result, the FDA plans to ban the production and sale of Primatene Mist and other inhalers that use CFCs as propellant on December 31, 2011. [2]

Action[edit]

Primatene Mist delivers 0.22 mg of 0.5% epinephrine per dose. The epinephrine acts as a smooth muscle relaxant in the bronchi of the lungs, binding to the alpha, beta-1 and beta-2 adrenergic receptors.[3]
