Io Makandal (b. 1987 in Johannesburg, South Africa) is a South African interdisciplinary artist and ecofeminist best known for her drawings and installation art, which she often refers to as tactile drawings[1]. Her artistic practice challenges the medium of drawing and is concerned with process, materialism, entropy, ecofeminism, environmentalism, and the binary between nature and artifice, living and dying, urban ecology, architecture, and the concept of the garden[2].

Personal Life

[edit]

Io Makandal was born to the artist and graphic designer Iaan Bekker (father), who design the current Coat of Arms of South Africa[3] and environmentalist and Permaculture farmer Michèle Schiess ( mother). Her paternal grandfather was Springbok rugby player Dolf (Rudolf) Bekker[4] and her maternal grandfather was the Swiss-born, South African playwright, director and Jungian Mario Schiess[5]. She grew up with an unconventional childhood in Pretoria and later moved to Johannesburg in 2003 with her mother and sisters where she completed school. In 2007 she moved to Cape Town to pursue her studies in Fine Art.

Career

[edit]

Makandal received her BA in Fine Art from Michaelis School of Fine Art, University of Cape Town in 2010 where she studied sculpture and painting[6] under the supervision of Jane Alexander (artist) and Virginia MacKenny. She returned to Johannesburg in 2013 where she is still currently based and working as an artist, researcher, graphic designer, and teacher[7].
