Wikipedia:Editor's index to Wikipedia

Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt.

Abraham Lincoln

"To the outside world, Wikipedia seems to appear through magical chaos, but we know better: it's through the efforts of thoughtful people getting organized, rolling up their sleeves, and getting something done."

Jimbo Wales

"When I am asked to look into cases of "admin abuse" and I choose to do so, I generally find myself astounded at how nice we are to complete maniacs, and for how long."

Jimbo Wales

"re WP:BLP: Seriously, anyone who puts protecting new editors and retaining terrible content above upholding ethical and legal commitments to integrity, accuracy, and protection of a person's reputation is quite simply a massive idiot"

Jimbo Wales

When I was a young man, I admired people who were clever. Now that I am old, I admire kind people.

Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel

I am only one, but still I am one; I cannot do everything, but still I can do something; I will not refuse to do the something I can do.

Helen Keller

My work on Wikipedia

[edit]

Most of my work has been to maintain or improve articles chosen randomly across the spectrum. I have done a lot of copyediting and vandal fighting. I participate in several projects and discussion forums. I occasionally create an article when I see an opportunity, or make a major contribution to an underdeveloped article. I try to provide comprehensive references to any articles where I have provided most of the content. I am fortunate to live close to an outstanding research library. These are my "Barnstars"

Personal Details

[edit]

I retired as a computer programmer in 2001, and as a personal and workplace counsellor in 2007.

After using Wikipedia for several years, I found an article which I thought I could improve, and decided to become an editor.

Natural Languages

[edit]

I have some knowledge of French, France and some German, Germany. I began learning Russian Russia in 1992, but have forgotten most of it.

Learning Latin Italy and Classical Greek Greece, helped me to understand etymology and the history and structure of European languages.

Studying these languages improved my understanding of English Grammar, the peculiarities of English, and the difficulty of really mastering one language, let alone several.

Programming Languages

[edit]

I learned numerous computer programming languages and scripting languages, between 1968 and 2001, beginning with FortranIV and Assembler Language on a Control Data Corporation 3000 series mainframe, ending with 'Avenue' (a GIS scripting language for ArcView 3.x), Perl and HTML. I thought of myself as a technical applications programmer.

"Where do I begin?"

Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, that explains millions of things about the world, the people and things on it, and beyond. There are 2 ways to look things up in Wikipedia: by searching or by browsing...

If you would like to look around Wikipedia to see what is on it, keep in mind that many major subjects have a root article on the Portal:Contents/Overviews page, and an outline listed at Portal:Contents/Outlines.

There are some other "Tables of Contents" type pages on Wikipedia. They are:
