The Advance Assault Unit commonly referred to as the Advance Assault Force by the general public, is a covert special operation advance guard and assault troops led by General Staff Chief Shinji Ikari. It is a direct successor unit of the Dedicated Special Missions Operatives Corps of the United Nations, retaining much of the same officers, training, and tactics. They, however, directly serve under the Washington Treaty Organization while being sponsored by the United Nations. They are the de facto assault combined arms force of the ISA and later the WSG.
The AAU does not disclose the identities or the number of personnel within the unit, however, secretly they consist of only 20+ specially trained officers under the command of Shinji Ikari. They function as advance guards and assault troops who are responsible for undertaking extensive offensive operations while maintaining extensive secrecy and unpredictability. The AAU is tactically reinforced by auxiliary airborne artillery, transport, and military police units under the direct jurisdiction of the ISA. Aside from their offensive role as shock troops, they also function as bodyguards and special missions operatives for high-ranking or influential commanding and executive officers of the United Nations and Washington Treaty Organization(s). This was most noticeable when Shinji Ikari, the AAU’s commanding officer, served as Col. Misato Katsuragi’s personal bodyguard and enforcer from late-2030 onwards. Because of this, they also serve roles equivalent to the Roman Praetorian Guard and Frumentarii.
The Advance Assault Unit have an extremely prevalent reputation worldwide, being recognized for their extreme secrecy, effectiveness, and relentless brutality in field operations. They do not accept any kind of surrender from enemy combatants, resorting to indiscriminate mass killings instead. Unless spoken to by commanding officers while on duty, AAU personnel remain quiet at all times, flanking their superiors. This had resulted in the entire group being nicknamed various names throughout their operational history including the Black Guard, the Death Guard, and Misato’s Attack Dogs, but most commonly as Stormtroopers, or Death Troopers.
