or Edward C. Wilson of Friends School of Baltimore new article content ...Edward Clarkson Wilson was born July 11, 1870 in Solmesville, Ontario, Canada; son of Isaac and Ruth (Stickney). Wilson married Elizabeth West Twining in 1898, after receiving a B.S from Swarthmore College in 1891. Wilson was a Quaker, and for the next 12 years he would teach at Quaker schools including Barnard School of New York, Sidwell Friends School and would head the science department at Friends Central School in Philadelphia. 1903 marked the year Wilson would be hired by the committee at Friends School of Baltimore, and serve as the principle for the next two and a half decades;after proving his self a great asset, Wilson was able to obtain a large salary and receive a percentage of the schools profits after expenses. The new principle had no reservations about building a top rank teaching staff, and would dismiss teachers he felt did not fulfill his expectations, and replace them with individuals he felt better suited for the job. Enrollment at the school more than doubled under Wilsons’ leadership, from 201 students in 1903 to over 500 in the following 24 years. Due to health issues, Wilson would retire from Friends School of Baltimore in 1927; and in 1946 two years after his death the E.C. Wilson Scholarship was founded at his bequest, and remains active as of 2010. [1] [2]
