From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Reality shifting (RS) is a spiritual practice of "shifting" one's consciousness, or transcending one's physical confines to an alternate reality, often a fictional universe.

The idea of reality shifting was originated by fandom (particularly of the Harry Potter book and film series) and spread via social media, especially via TikTok. Its rise in popularity is connected to the COVID-19 pandemic, establishment of lockdowns globally and imposition of social isolation.

Reality shifting has been compared and connected to other phenomena, such as tulpamancy and lucid dreaming. Eli et al. (2023) notes a potential risk of "a decreased sense of control of mental contents", comparing it to risk brought by excessive use of lucid dreaming.
