Thomas Legall Yates

The Hon. Thomas Legall Yates (1785-1835) was born in Port Royal, Jamaica, the son of Ambrose Nicholas Yates (1756-1844), Island Store Keeper of the British Naval Dockyard at Port Royal and Coffee Planter, of Exeter Coffee Plantation in the Port Royal Mountains. His Mother was Frances Beckford, daughter of Ballard Beckford II, Sugar Planter, of Whitehall Estate, St. Mary, Jamaica. He was educated in England and returned to Jamaica to become a Merchant in Port Royal and later Kingston. He joined the Port Royal Regiment of Militia in 1806 as an Ensign, becoming Colonel of the Regiment in 1821 and a Major-General in the Jamaica Militia in 1832. He was elected a Member of Assembly for Port Royal in the House of Assembly of Jamaica in 1810, 1813 and 1825 and for St. Andrew in 1830. He became a Partner with James Cockburn in the Kingston Merchant Firm of Cockburn and Yates during the Napoleonic Wars. He was a Common Councillor for Kingston in 1814, Alderman for Kingston in 1829 and became Mayor of Kingston in 1829. He was also a Churchwarden for the St. Andrew Anglican Parish Church from 1826 to 1831. He later became Custos of Kingston in 1832. In 1834 he retired to England and purchased Brockhurst Lodge near Southampton in Hampshire. He died there on the 27th of July, 1835.

Thomas Legall (or Legal) Yates was elected to the House of Assembly of Jamaica in 1820 for the parish of Port Royal.[1][2]
