Emma of Barcelona (circa 880 - 942) was a catalan religious, best known for being the first abbess of the Monastery of Sant Joan de les Abadesses. She was the daughter of Wilfred the Hairy and Guinidilda of Empúries, Counts of Barcelona.

Biography[edit]

In the year 885 Wilfred established the Monastery of San Joan de les Abadesses as a way to repopulate Catalonia's central district.Cite error: The <ref> tag has too many names (see the help page). Emma was intended to become the abbess of the monastery since she was little. In fact, in her infancy, she was educated and guided by Wilfred and by a community of canons that, probably, resided in the cenoby, thanks to the tutelage of Gotmar, the first bishop of Vic.
