City of Eugene Recreation Services is a division of the City of Eugene Library, Recreation, and Cultural Services Division (LRCS). The City of Eugene government is comprised of six departments: Eugene Police, Fire & Emergency Services, Public Works, Planning and Development, Central Services, and LRCS.
The Recreation Services Division provides services in five program areas: Adult, Athletics, Aquatics, Adaptive, and Youth & Family.
Youth & Family Program
[edit]The mission of the Youth & Family Program is to “create opportunities that inspire a life-long passion to imagine, explore, learn, grow and contribute.” [1] Youth & Family Services also includes the Outdoor Program, which provides fun, life-enriching and educational opportunities out-of-doors for youth and adults. The Outdoor program offers seasonal outdoor activities, specializing in providing safe, fun, quality instructions to individuals and groups that are pursuing outdoor interests. The Program offers experiential educational programs through partnerships with community centers, non-profit organizations and local schools.
Outdoor Program
[edit]Outdoor Program activities change with the season and the times, but a short list of activities includes canoeing, kayaking, rafting, biking, skateboarding, surfing, sailing, rafting, tree-climbing, rock-climbing, skiing, snowboarding, walking and hiking. Outdoor Program offerings can be found in that season's Recreation Guide.
Two specialized activities are the Skinner Butte Challenge Course and Alpine Adventures. The Challenge Course is a series experiential group activities that focus on team building and leadership. Challenge Course facilitators foster a physically and emotionally safe environment as they encourage participants to challenge and surprise themselves as they accomplish low and high elements of the course.
Alpine Adventures is an adaptive ski/snowboard and cross-country ski program. The program offers beginner to advanced ski lessons using adaptive equipment. Skiers are matched with trained volunteer instructors and learn to ski using appropriate adaptive equipment and techniques.
