[edit]Introduction
[edit]Ahmedabad is the largest city in Gujarat and it is the seventh largest city in India with an area of 109.84 km square. It is located in central Gujarat. Ahmedabads's population of 5,633,927 (as per 2011 population census) makes it the fifth most populous city in India, and the encompassing urban agglomeration population estimated at 7,650,000 is the seventh most populous in India. Gujarat ranked 3rd in having largest non-notified slums in the country. Gujarat has 2.48% cent of the total slum population of the country. While Ahmedabad has the second largest slum population in the state. As per the latest census conducted in 2011, there are a total of 439843 slums in the city. In Ahmedabad, 1.49 lakh slum dwellers are literate; and around 20% of the slum population is of Scheduled caste and Scheduled Tribe categories[1]. According to the Global Report on understanding Slums 2003, the percentage of Ahmedabad housing categorized as slums increased from 17.2% in 1961 to 22.8% in 1971 and 25.6% in 1991. It is estimated that 17.1% of Ahmedabad's population lived in slums in 1971. This rose to an estimated 21.4% in 1982. As per the latest figures, 40% of Ahemdabad's population lives in slums and chawls.
In Ahmedabad, there are two types of slums: Chawls which were originally the residential units build in the mill premises for workers, and slums which represent illegal occupation of marginal areas of the city by migrants and other economically weaker sections. The latter lack adequate facilities and basic amenities and are found along the riverfront , low lying areas, vacant private/government land etc[2]
History
[edit]Ahmedabad is a very healthy city in the 19's century even during in the Mughal period.
Ahmedabad is a very rich and historical place even it is reach in the commercial , financial , and
industrial centre. in 19's century Ahmedabad is a hub of the gold , and silk cloths. very large
industry of the coals and silk cloths are in the Ahmedabad . in the Ahmedabad there are many
places there were slums are located that place very long time. there are gulbai tekra , Vastrapur ,
lakhudi , etc. government of Gujarat take some actions for this slums they are provide houses to all
the families but it is not very successful that government is think about it. for the reason of the
traffic government of Gujarat takes decision to Vastrapur slums area shifted in the S.P. ring road ,
and Sanand area. in the Ahmedabad there are many flats , bungalows, housing society etc. as
well as there are many slum area. that the reason of the Ahmedabad is not very rich city. because
in the ahmedabd slums area and rich area is equally so it is not very well developed. 20 years
back there are many slums area in ahmedabad but in this time this all slums area is cutting down
and this all area have a large numbers of the flats, society , and industry. if the country have more
slums area it is less educated, less health conscious , and less number of amount that they
earning. Ahmedabad has taken a step further in the direction of becoming a slum free city
Location And Characteristics
[edit]Hollywood Basti
[edit]In Ahmedabad, there are many slum area but one of the famous slum area is Gulbai Tekra and is popularly known as Hollywood Basti. Hollywood slum has two anganwadis and a municipal school nearby. But in that muncipal school only few children are studying as they have to help their family. Hollywood Basti is a home of 7000 families which makes it Dharavi of Ahmedabad. Here most of the people residing are rajasthani marwadis who make idols before festival time, and also work as domestic labour. They are lots of intriguing stories as to how the slums got their name. If you see in the map you can see that hollywood basti is an triangular in shape. This basti is famous in making ganesh idols. It's nearly a kilometer area covered with slums indulged in crafting, antiques and used goods[3]
Lakhudi Talav
[edit]Lakhudi Talav slum is in Sardar Patel Stadium area. According to the detail that came in RTI, out of 568 houses surveyed, only 148 were occupied by the persons who were originally allotted the units. While 155 had interchanged the units, 157 were found to be tenants - which is against the rule. A total of 108 houses were locked. From report we can say that there are approx 600 houses present in Lakhudi Talav. At the moment, no record of the original dwellers who were removed from the spot and rehabilitated is available. In report we can also see that there were 568 person raising questions but the voters list from 2005 to 2012 showed only 350 occupants of the slum at Lakhudi Talav area. [4]
There also slums present in different areas like gomtipur, naroda, vatva, odhav etc of Ahmedabad.
Incidences of diseases in slum areas
[edit]The slums of Ahmedabad is considered as the third largest slums across Gujarat. the population living in slum areas was 10,74,465 (2008) which is 55.80% of the total population living in Ahmedabad. Eastern part of Ahmedabad which includes areas like Nikol, Bapunagar, Gomtipur, Rakhial, Odhav, Vastral, Hatkeshwar, Ramol, Hathijan, etc[5]. where the slum population is maximum which is 7,08,750 which consists of 77% of the total slums in Ahmedabad. The disease trend rate was studied for the year 2008-2011 for four major diseases like gastroenteritis, typhoid, jaundice and malaria[6]. This studied was classified under different zones in Ahmedabad particularly, central, west, new-west, north, south and east. Also, a total of 63 wards from different areas were part of this survey
Gastroenteritis
[edit]Majority of the population in all the zones had a disease rate from 0-100 (per 1000) except the eastern zone and south zone. The disease rate in east zone was 369 while the disease rate in south zone was 303.
Typhoid
[edit]The disease rate for typhoid in all the zones was lying between 0-50 or 50-100 except for east zone, the disease rate for east zone was higher and was around 120.
Jaundice
[edit]Compared to other disease jaundice had the worst disease rate. the disease rate exceeded 500 in the north and the central zone. the disease rate in jamalpur ward of central zone had an disease rate of 898, while in behrampur and danilimda ward of south zone had an disease rate 1025 and 802 respectively.
Malaria
[edit]The reports for malaria were normal compared to all the other diseases, all the wards in all the zones had had disease rate 0-50 or 50-100 except for east and south zones, these zones had slightly higher rate lying in 101-200.
Water Related Problems
[edit]Water issue is also there in the slums. So the rates of the disease are also linked with the supply of water. The presence of medical facilities is very less provided in these slums accordingly among all the slums, eastern slums has inadequate water supply. By concluding, we can say that west and North West slums have better health condition among all the slums. Out of all the slums, east zone has highest slum population.
Yet many part of the slums in Ahmedabad like narol, rakhyal, danilimda there is not proper storm water drainage system, only 23% of slums in Ahmedabad have proper storm drainage facility. So there is a problem of water logging over there, which gives birth to many water borne diseases like cholera, diarrhoea and typhoid fever.
East zone has the highest slum population resulting into a low standard lifestyle, which invites more waterborne and vector borne diseases. Because of lack of proper storm drainage facility, inadequate water drinking facility, this zone makes more vulnerable for people to live in.[7]
