Linda Troeller(1949 - ) is an American photographer known largely for her pictures of spas, health treatments and bathhouses, as well as her images exploring female sexuality and identity. Troeller began college at West Virginia University as a drama student but changed her major to photography upon viewing portraits of Georgia O’Keefe at Ghost Ranch in New Mexico. After completing her graduate studies (MS Newhouse and MFA School of Art, Syracuse University), she worked as an assistant in the Ansel Adams workshop. Since then, she has published four books and exhibited extensively in numerous international venues including the Havana Biennial, Cuba, F-stop Festival, Leipzig, Fotofest, Houston, Centro Colombo Gallery, Medellin, Colombia and the Melkweg Gallery in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Her first book, TB-AIDS Diary, published in Portugal in 1988, explores the connection between the past stigmatization of TB patients and that experienced by AIDS patients in the modern world.[1] She was named Woman of Achievement in 1992 for the project by Douglass College, New Jersey and the exhibition was seen in museums worldwide. Her next publication was Healing Waters, in which she documented spas and hot springs. It was published in 1998 in the United States by Aperture and was featured in Life magazine, as well as winning Pictures of the Year, 1st Pictorial. The Erotic Lives of Women was published by Scalo, Zurich, that same year and was touted by Susie Bright of the New York Times as “one of the most gutsy and imaginative erotic books of the decade.” The exhibitions were featured at Fotohof, Salzburg where she was a professor at the Salzburg Summer Art Academy in 2000.
In 2001-2005, she was commissioned by the Apolda Museum to photograph the Apolda Design Award Catalogues. Her photographs are in the art collection of Marion Schneider and Klaus Baum for their Liquid Sound Hotels in Bad Sulza and Bad Orb, Germany.
In 2007, she published Chelsea Hotel Atmosphere: An Artist’s Memoir, which documented life inside the infamous Chelsea Hotel in New York, which Troeller has been a resident of since 1994.[2] She also acted as curator for a photography show commemorating the Hotel’s 125th anniversary in 2008. She has taught at Parsons School of Design, New York and Richard Stockton College of New Jersey as well as lectured at Yale, University of Nevada, Las Vegas, New Orleans Photo Alliance and Bournemouth College, England. She continues to make work in the art documentary tradition and to publish widely.
