Courtyard Sculptures at the University of British Columbia Okanagan

[edit]
UBCO Courtyard

The University of British Columbia Okaganan (UBCO) courtyard is located at the centre of campus and connects the Arts, Science, Library and Administration buildings. This space is primarily used by students for informal gatherings, receptions, and lunches.[1]

Pair of Deer

[edit]

“Pair of Deer” is a sculpture on the grounds of the University of British Columbia Okanagan Campus. It was gifted by the father of an undergraduate student, River Sidley, after his passing in 2015. The bronze sculptures serve as a physical memory of River’s legacy. River’s legacy is further remembered at the University through the River Timothy Sidley Memorial Award. This award honours River’s passion for marine biology by supporting students who pursue additional studies at the Bamfield Marine Science Centre.[2]

Traditional Syilx Summer Lodge

[edit]

As a celebration for the 10th anniversary of the UBC Okanagan campus and a commemoration of the university's centennial, a traditional Syilx summer lodge was created and placed on campus by artist Les Louis. Constructed from pine trees retrieved from the Okanagan territory, Les Louis engraved stories by means of pictograph symbols on each of the seven logs. The structure was unveiled on September 27th, 2016, the same day that the Prince William and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge visited the Okanagan campus.[3]
