Friedrich Kuhlmann (* February, 14th 1939 in Soltau, Germany) is a German agricultural economist and professor emeritus of farm management at Justus-Liebig-University of Giessen, Germany.

Life and professional Career[edit]

Friedrich Kuhlmann studied agriculture and economics at the Justus-Liebig-University of Giessen and the Technical University of Berlin from 1962 through 1966. He graduated as an agricultural engineer. In 1968, he earned his doctoral degree with a dissertation on “Models of economic growth – a theoretical and empirical analysis with respect to the agricultural sector”. In 1971 he received the venia legendi with a thesis on “Withdrawable income in growing farm firms”. From 1966 through 1971 he, while being a research assistant, was a member of the Institute of farm management at the University of Giessen. He continued his academic education as a research associate at Michigan State University, USA, where he also studied Systems Science.

In 1973, Friedrich Kuhlmann was appointed professor of farm management, as well as director of a research farm at the University of Giessen. He was a visiting professor at Michigan State University, USA (1978/79), at North-West-University of Agriculture, China (1981) and at Humboldt University Berlin, Germany (1990/91). During the years 1973 to 1986 he conducted more than 20 short term missions for the German Development Cooperation as a project evaluator and planner in North Africa, sub-Saharan Africa, the Middle East and Latin America. In 1985, the University of Gödöllö, Hungary, awarded him a doctoral degree honoris causa. He declined appointments to chairs at the Technical University of Munich and at the Humboldt University of Berlin (1993). Friedrich Kuhlmann retired as a professor emeritus in 2007. Kuhlmann was Vice President of the University of Giessen (1981 – 1983), member of the scientific counsel with the German Federal Ministry of Agriculture (1994 – 2001), member of the board (1983 – 2006) and Vice President (2000 – 2006) of the German Agricultural Society (DLG) and chairman of the German Association of Agricultural Economists (1999 – 2002). He is honorary member of both Institutions. In 2013, the University of Bonn recognized Kuhlmann’s scientific achievements with the Theodor-Brinkmann-Award.

Kuhlmann’s scientific oeuvre comprises more than 200 journal and book publications, as well as more than 250 conference presentations on the economic theory of farm firms, on IT-based decision support systems for agricultural enterprises, on land use models for rural regions and on resource economics. He was supervisor of 106 Ph.D. students, 14 of whom are meanwhile professors themselves. Since 1998 he is a co-editor of the journal “Computers and Electronics in Agriculture”.

Friedrich Kuhlmann is married and father of two grown-up sons.
