Stephane Janin (born in 1973, France) is a professional car designer who has been worked for various brands including Renault, Dacia, Alpine and Infiniti. Janin is widely known as the project leader of influential concept cars from Renault such as Renault Trezor Concept, Renault EZ-GO Concept, Renault EZ-PRO Concept, and Renault EZ-Ultimo Concept. He is currently working as a Design Director at GAC (Guangzhou Automobile Group Co., Ltd.) Advanced Design Studio Europe located at Milano, Italy.

Early life

Janin was born in France, 1973[1]. He got into the field of art and design in 1991, when he started to major in graphic design at École nationale supérieure des arts appliqués et des métiers d'art (ENSAAMA). He changed his major into industrial design in 1992 after finishing his freshman year. Janin graduated ENSAAMA in 1994 with BA Degree of Industrial Design, and he decided to get into the field of transportation design.

Since there was no college or university in France that offering transportation design education[2], Janin decided to move to Coventry, United Kingdom after he got accepted for second year of transportation design department at Coventry University in 1994. After studying at Coventry University for few months, he also got accepted for Royal College of Art (RCA) in 1995, located in London, United Kingdom. Janin was sponsored tuitions and living expenses by Renault at the time he was studying at RCA, which led him to start his professional automotive design career at Renault right after his graduation from RCA in 1997.

Janin joined Renault as a junior designer in 1997, and started to participate in numerous projects. The first project released to world with his contribution was the Avantime Concept in 1999. Janin continued to participate in many other concept models from Renault regardless of exterior or interior design of the vehicle, including Koleos Concept, Talisman Concept, Wind Concept, and Zoe Concept. He also had worked on production models of Renault, such as Clio (3rd Gen.) and Megane (3rd Gen).

After the successful career as a designer, Janin was appointed to a design director of Renault in 2006, just 10 years after he started his automotive design career.

Director

As a design director of Renault, Janin had managed the most of Renault Group's concept cars and some production models, including Renault, Alpine, Infiniti and Dacia brand. His most well-known and influential projects were the Trezor Concept from 2016, and the EZ-Series including EZ-GO Concept, EZ-PRO Concept. and EZ-Ultimo Concept from 2018. These concept cars were sensational when they were revealed due to their bold, modern design language, and insights on the future of mobility, especially utilizing level 5 autonomous driving technology to change people's perspective toward the cars.

The Trezor Concept from 2016 was a 2-seater luxury GT coupe concept that proposed lots of innovative technologies and design ideas, such as tail-lights made out of optic fibers, and hexagonal-faceted body surfaces that creates strong impressions[3].

The EZ-Series concept cars were all equipped with level-5 autonomous driving technology, but three different EZ-concepts were utilizing it for different purpose. For instance, the EZ-PRO was an unmanned delivery vehicle for metropolitan area, while EZ-Ultimo was a futuristic limousine equipped with high-end boutique hotel feeling interior, which created the vision for the future of chauffer-driven luxury vehicles[4].

In 2018, after the success of EZ-Series, Janin was appointed to the Deputy General Manager of Brand Design Strategy of Infiniti brand, which is a subsidiary company of Renault Group. He directed the process of building new design strategy for Nissan and Infiniti brand.

In 2020, Janin was promoted to the General Manager of Brand Design Strategy for Renault Group, directing design tasks of all the brands under Renault Group.

In 2021, Janin left Renault Group after two decades, and joined Guangzhou Automobile Group Co., Ltd.(GAC) as a Design Director of Advanced Design Studio Europe in Milano, Italy[5].
