Thomas Sanford Austin (born February 3, 1971) is an independent American filmmaker, ranging from director, actor, writer and producer.[1]
Early life
[edit]Austin was born in Nichols Hills, Oklahoma and raised in Texas. On his father's side, he is directly related to Stephen F. Austin. Prior to working in film he performed as a professional actor on the stage in Oklahoma City as Brick in "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof", Philadelphia as Tom Joad in "The Grapes of Wrath" and New York City where he starred in the world premiere of Henry Miller's "Lawyers" with Kevin Conway ,"Death of a Salesman" with Ralph Waite and a slew off-off-broadway plays. He then received his MFA in Acting from Temple University.
Career
[edit]After a string of smaller roles, Austin's acting career became notable in 2003 by starring in "Family Tree," Vicky Jenson's (Director of Shrek) live action directorial debut, alongside Talia Shire, Ethan Philips and Harland Williams. [2] However his venture into directing and producing has become his most polished 'Characteristic', averaging four movies a year as producer.[3] Although low-budget and independent; some of his movies garner high praise and obtain a very respectable cast having won the 'Golden Halo Award' three times and produced movies with the likes of Art LaFleur, Rena Riffel, Steven Adler, Tom Sizemore, Harland Williams, Ezra Buzzington, Darren Dalton, and Ethan Phillips. Austin's most recent horror comedy film of note is the 2010 horror comedy, Dahmer Vs. Gacy starring himself, Art LaFleur, Harland Williams, Ethan Phillips, Randal Malone and Steven Adler. [9]
His most current production is "The Right to Love: An American Family" directed by Cassie Jaye. The feature length documentary follows a same sex family as they fight for their right to marriage. Austin produced the film from a hospital bed in seven different hospital stays over he purse of two years. "The Right to Love: An American Family" ran for one week at Laemmle Theatres in 2012 and a secode week in New York City at the Quad Cinema.
Ford Autin is a Motion Picture Council member of the Producers Guild of America (2012.
Awards
[edit]In 2006, Austin was awarded the 'Golden Halo Award' by the Southern California Motion Picture Council for his film 'Tiny Dancer', was bestowed the honor again in 2009 for his acting ability in 'Falling Down' and a third time for his acting and directing in 'Dahmer Vs. Gacy'. Founded in 1936 to promote the best in motion pictures, past honorees include: Jean Harlow, Bette Davis, Lucille Ball, James Stewart, Robert Mitchum, Tippi Hedren, Carol Channing and Charlton Heston.[10] [11] [12] [13]
- Nominated for 2012 Best Actor Award at the Buffalo Screams Film Festival for his star turn in Rat Scratch Fever.
- Received the 2010 Silver Telly award for his motion picture Dahmer Vs. Gacy.
- Received the 2010 AOF Courage to Create award for Dahmer Vs. Gacy.
- Received the 2011 Bare Bones Indepent Spirit Award honoring his body of work.
- Received the Dragoncon Best Comedy Award for his series [The Wright Stuff]].
- His short film Tiny Dancer Qualified for the 2007 Academy Awards.
- Received the 2005 Monty Python Award for Comedic Excellence for his motion picture Cerebral Print: The Secret Files.

Personal Life
[edit]Austin lives in Toluca Lake, California and also has a residence in New York City and Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
On March 9th, 2011, Ford Austin was involved in a near-fatal car accident which left him paralyzed and in a coma for two weeks. The trauma surgeons at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center gave him a 1% chance of survival and he did in fact die on the operating table three times before being stabilized. He has spent the past two years recovering. He produced a documentary feature from his hospital bed which qualified for the 2013 Academy Awards called "The Right to Love: An American Family".
