Loved Me Back to Life is the upcoming English-language studio album by Canadian singer Celine Dion. The album will be released by Columbia Records on 5 November 2013. The album will be preceeded by the lead single and title track, "Loved Me back to Life", and will be her first English-language release since Taking Chances (2007).[2]

Background

[edit]

On June 7, 2012, Dion's official website announced that the singer had started recording songs for an English album and a French album, both of which were to be released later that year. The French album was to include all new material, while the English album would include a combination of new material and cover songs that had been featured in her Las Vegas shows. [3] The English album was rumored to be titled Water And A Flame. [4]

On September 26, 2012, it was announced that that the release of the album would be delayed until 2013. The reason given was that the album was simply not 100% ready and that everyone involved wanted to release the best album possible. [5]

On March 7, 2013, Dion’s husband and manager, René Angélil, explained that the decision to postpone the release was made because the concept of the album had changed.[1] The album was initially planned to include six new songs and six cover songs that had been featured in Celine's Las Vegas shows.[1]

On July 24, 2013, Journal de Montreal journalist Raphel Martin stated on Twitter that Angelil informed him that the album would be released worldwide on 22 October 2013. The release date of the album was later postponed to November 5, 2013.[1]

Controversy

[edit]

In June 2013, It was reported by the Huffington Post that the album would be titled “Water and a Flame” after a cover of the song by Daniel Merriweather and Adele that was to feature on it.[6]

In July 2013, Merriweather posted on his official Facebook page accusing Dion of “stealing” his song and claiming that she wrote it herself.[7] The claims were in response to Dion’s appearance and interview on the Katie Couric show in April 2013. These claims were rebuked by Dion’s management in an official statement on her website on July 2nd 2013 stating that "Despite the headlines that have emerged from Daniel's publicity, Celine certainly doesn't claim in any way whatsoever that she wrote the song." It also stated that Dion often did not mention names of songwriters in interviews and she was upset by the claims.[8] Merriweather responded once again via Facebook, stating "In hindsight, I was wrong to say that Celine 'stole' my song, from a songwriting point of view this is not the case at all..." and “It turns out that she didn't realize that 'Water and a Flame' was my song from my album 'Love & War,' instead she thought it was an Adele song. She should've just done her homework before she decided to cover my song and then publicly imply credit to the featured act on the song (Adele).”[6] Adele has not made any public response in relation either Dion’s interview or the subsequent controversy.

Content

[edit]

In August 2012 it was confirmed on Dion’s official website that a cover of rock band Journey’s "Open Arms," which Dion performs as the opening number to her Las Vegas show, would be included on the upcoming English-language album.[9]

In September 2012, it was also revealed that "Ne me quitte pas" would appear on the album, however in November 2012, this track was released on the Deluxe Edition of her Francophone album Sans attendre.[10] Canadian magazine Le Journal de Montréal stated that the English album would also contain songs written by Eg White and a duet with Stevie Wonder on "Overjoyed," which Dion performed during her Las Vegas show.[11]

In March 2013, American singer Ne-Yo confirmed that he and Dion had recorded a duet that would feature on the upcoming album.[2][12] Ne-Yo has said that recording the song was a challenge and it made him question his vocal ability.[2] The duo first worked together on Dion’s 2007 album Taking Chances.

Another new track written by Diane Warren, "Unfinished Songs" was included in the British film Song for Marion.[13][4] However, when the soundtrack for the movie was released in February 2013, it did not feature Dion's song and it is yet to be confirmed if it will appear on the album.[14]

In July 2013, Raphel Martin, a journalist for Canadian magazine Journal de Montreal, stated on Twitter that Dion’s manager had confirmed "Loved Me Back to Life," written by Australian song writer Sia Furler was the first single and namesake of the album. The name of the album was confirmed by Dion’s official website later that day. Dion performed the song for the first time live in Quebec City on July 27, 2013.[15]
