Bracara Cup

Bracara Cup[1] is an international elite football tournament presented by Länk FC Vilaverdense[2] which had its first edition in 2019. This is a tournament gathered in Portugal and counts with the participation of different football teams with players of both genres. Can only participate players who have less or 19 years old. For one week they participate with the goal of achieving the final prize enjoying at the same time the opportunity of competing between them.

This event has already three editions, one in 2019, ohter in 2021, (Bracara eCup [3]in an online format, due to COVID-19) and another in 2022. The fourth edition of the tournament will be held in 2023, Viana do Castelo during the month of August.

History

The Name

The origin of the name Bracara Cup is from latin bracari[4] that means barbarians. Barbarians were pre-roman people of skeptical culture whom inhabitated in the peninsular northwest and are a symbol of historical and cultural heritage of North of Portugal.

First Edition

The first edition of Bracara Cup took place in between 5 and August 9 of 2019 and was attended by men's and women's teams of six different clubs.

The tournment was held in Braga, city of Portugal. The female teams were Allmänna Idrottsklubben Fotbool, FC Nordsjaelland, Reial Club Deportiu Espaynol de Barcelona e o Sporting Clube de Braga. The male teams were Länk FC Vilaverdense, Allmänna Idrottsklubben Fotbool, Olympique de Marseille e Sporting Clube de Braga.

In this first edition, whe winner in both genres was the same team, Sporting Clube de Braga. [5]

Second Edition

The second edition of the event returned in 2021, at the date of July 31 and it went until August 6 but this time with the name of Bracara eCup in an online format, after one year break due to COVID-19.[6] In this edition participated 16 teams such as Sporting Clube de Braga,Länk FC Vilaverdense, RasenBallsport Leipzing, Oud-Heverlee Leuven,Clube desportivo de Tondela, Beşiktaş Jimnastik Külübü, Valencia Club de Fútbol, VfL Wolfsburg, Futebol Clube de Famalicão, Sociedad Deportiva Eibar, Boavista Futebol Clube, Malmö Fotbollförening, Elite Lions Club, eFC Porto Soccersoul , Sporting CP Esports and Paris Saint-German eSports.

The first prize was awarded in the value of 1.500 euros to Anders Vejrgang of the RasenBallsport Leipzing team, and the second on the amount of 500 euros to Dani Navarrete.

Third Edition

The third edition of this event took place in between 14 and 17 of July 2022, and it only participated female teams. The tournment asigned city was Vila Nova de Famalicão, in Portugal, more specifically Famalicão Futboll Academy but the final games were in Braga city at the May 1º Stadium. Participating in this event were teams such as Futebol Clube Famalicão, Sporting Clube de Portugal, Vitória Sport Club, PSV Eindhoven and Länk FC Vilaverdense. The winner team was Sporting Clube de Portugal.[7]

Fourth Edition

The fourth edition of this tournment is scheduled for August in Viana do Castelo, Portugal.

Throphy

The Bracara Cup 2022 Trophy is an example of the Bracara Cup enduring symbolism which relares to Bracara people[8], known for their streinght, prestige and distinction.

The throphy is based on a distinctive piece from the Dom Diogo de Sousa Museum[9], located in Braga[10], Portugal.[11] This piece represents the history of Northern Portugal and it's a tribute to Brácaros.

The main meaning is that the winning team is endowed with the same qualities as Brácaros.
