Mark Lloyd (born 1971) is a British artist who works in painting. He was profiled by the Saatchi Gallery as part of the ‘New Sensations 2012'.[1]

His work synthesizes the traditional and non-traditional and as such his work is made from a diverse combination of painting processes in which the digital age/information age of the computer and technology is integral to his practice. His work is influenced by philosophy and science fiction and has been described as Post-postmodernist or Metamodernist.

History

He began is career as a graffiti artist in the mid 1980's. He went on to study fine art at Falmouth School of Art, the Slade School of Fine Art, and Winchester School of Art.

Mark's work can be seen online at Fad's website / Mark Lloyd 'Get your art on.' In the 1990's Mark disappeared (citation needed). He reappeared in 2006 and in 2008 won the NIACE (National Institute of Adult Continuing Education) European adult Learner of the Year Award, about which he stated 'learning gives me purpose'. He went on to qualify as lecturer at the University of Southampton in 2009.

Work

Mark’s work addresses weighty themes such as; individual and societal consumption, a search for God or higher powers, human advancement in the age of digital technology , dystopia , apocalypse, cultural identify, failed utopian dreams, science fiction and philosophy.


The metamodernist Lloyd explores themes from iconic science fiction films

The writings of the postmodern philosophers; Baudrillard , Lacan and Laporte have had a major influence on his practice, but of key importance is the work of Slavoj Zizek. Mark’s work blurs philosophical conceptions and science fictions and generally takes the form of large mixed media paintings, but his work has also manifested in photography , printmaking , drawing , installation art , sculpture and digital imagery. Mark is part of a small group of contemporary artist’s worldwide who are addressing these themes in their work. The term ‘apocalypticalism’ has been used to lo ely describe their collective intentions; their work has potency in the context of the current financial global meltdown. His work has been shown at many galleries in the UK and he he has work in numerous private collections.
