Function

[edit]

The skeleton performs a variety of functions. It supports the body, is the attachment point for muscles, absorbs shock from the force of moving muscles (during locomotion), and protects soft tissue from injury, predation, infection, and disease.

There are 4 major growth patterns of skeletons: accretion, molting, addition of skeletal elements, and modification.[1]
