The "chug", less commonly known as the "puwawa" is a hybrid (cross-bred) dog that is the offspring of a pug and a chihuahua. Some dogs that are referred to as "chugs" may have been born of a parent(or parents)whose lineage includes an additional breed.

Breed Composition

The pug is the largest breed in the toy group. Colors are generally limited to fawn and black. The breed originated in Asia and may be one of the oldest breeds of domestic dog. The breed standard, as described by the American Kennel Club calls for a square frame, a large round head, and clearly defined markings. ^[1]

The chihuahua is the smallest breed in the toy group. The color and length of coat varies extensively. The earliest records of the breed were found in the Mexican state of Chihuahua, from which the dog derives its name. The breed standard describes a dog no heavier than 6 pounds, with a moderately short muzzle and and frame that is longer when measured from shoulder to hip. ^[2]

The Chug

The chug exhibits breed characteristics of both the pug and chihuahua. Coat length tends to be short, and like the pug, tends to favor the pug in markings and coloration, but can appear in a variety of colors. The dog can potentially weigh over 20 lbs., and typically exhibits folded ears. Chugs may possess a pronounced under-bite in which the lower mandible extends past the upper mandible. The tail is generally long, as in the chihuahua, but maintains a slight curl as evidenced by the pug. As the breed is derived from two companion breeds, a chug is likely to form close relationship with an attentive owner. The chug is a lesser known mixed breed and results from both random breeding as well as intentional breeding as a "designer dog".

"Jake" the Chug was named Most Valuable Player in the 2010 Puppy Superbowl.^[3]
