Shiites Against War (Arabic: الشيعة ضد الحرب) is an emerging Lebanese Shiite protest movement calling to avoid war between Lebanon and Israel. It promotes a new vision for Shia Muslims in Lebanon opposing the dominance of Hezbollah and Amal.[1][2]
History
[edit]Days after the beginning of the Israel-Hamas war and the Israel-Hezbollah conflict in October 2023, a social media campaign under the slogan "Lebanon does not want war, so that the past will not be repeated" was launched. The campaign gradually expanded and took other forms, and the slogan was spread on social media on a wider scale, including a petition signed by Lebanese citizens expressing their rejection of the war (Consensus among the Lebanese). [1][3]
Shiites Against War launched a Facebook page in early November, which calls to avoid war and emphasizes that not all Shiites belong to the Shiite duo Hezbollah or Amal Movement. It is believed that Ali Khalifeh, the former candidate for the Shiite seat in the Zahrani district, and activist Hadi Mourad, the founders of Taharror movement, are behind the movement.[4]
Activities
[edit]The movement is advocating about the danger of a war in Lebanon and about the evil force that will drag Lebanon to destruction. It call the Shiites in Lebanon to be loyal to their country, and not to their religious closeness to Iran. The movement also promotes Taharror movement.[1]
