On March 6, 2024, Akif Gurbanov was arrested during a raid on the offices of Toplum TV, IDI, and the Third Republic Platform. The authorities charged him with conspiring to smuggle foreign currency, claiming they found €30,000 during the search. Gurbanov, along with his lawyer, denied these charges, stating that the money was planted by the police to silence his critical stance against the government.[1]

On March 8, 2024, Gurbanov was remanded to four months of pre-trial detention by the court.

On June 3, 2024, the Baku Court of Appeal upheld the Khatai Court’s decision to seize property from the offices of IDI and the Third Republic, dismissing the defense’s arguments that the arrests and seizures were illegal.

On June 4, 2024, the Third Republic released a statement detailing the threats Gurbanov faced in Baku’s pre-trial detention center N1. High-ranking government officials reportedly harassed Gurbanov in retaliation for his criticisms of the authorities during the Court of Appeals. They demanded that he cease his criticism of President Aliyev and allegedly threatened him with torture. Additionally, prison authorities were reported to have threatened other arbitrarily detained individuals involved with Toplum TV and IDI with worsening prison conditions if Gurbanov continued his criticisms[2]
