Jonathan Snowden is the author of the critically acclaimed book Total MMA: Inside Ultimate Fighting[1]. Snowden, who graduated from The University of Georgia School of Law, joined the Army in the months after September 11, 2001. The hand to hand combat training he received there inspired him to further study the martial arts. Looking for a guide to the sport of MMA ,especially its history, he was disappointed to find none existed.[2]
His book, Total MMA, was called "the definitive history of the sport" by CBS Sports[3] and journalist and MMA matchmaker Sam Caplan said "If the history of MMA was taught as a college course, Total MMA would be the official textbook used for the class."[4] Wrestling Observer editor Dave Meltzer called the book "The best book on the real history of MMA that I've seen. . . . This book really is so great I couldn't put it down . . . it's a thorough history dating back to the turn of the 20th century, covering the heydays in Brazil, Japan, and major UFC opposition groups over the past 15 years in North America."[5]
Snowden has finished a follow up book, an MMA Encyclopedia[6], that will be published in winter 2010. He is currently working on a book with MMA fighter Shane Carwin, and writes regularly for a variety of websites and magazines.
