"The Hero That Was!", alternately known as "The Origin of Captain America!", is a story published in Captain America #109, an American comic book published by Marvel Comics in January 1969. Written by Stan Lee and drawn by Jack Kirby, it is a retelling of the origin story of the superhero Captain America.

Steve Rogers, the civilian identity of the superhero Captain America, is visited by his World War II compatriot Nick Fury. Rogers tells the story of one of his final missions with his sidekick Bucky Barnes, then recounts the events that led him to become a costumed hero. Reception and legacy[edit]
Though Kirby continued to illustrate occasional fill-in issues of Captain America, "The Hero That Was!" marks the effective end of the artist's 1960s run on the series; he would return to Captain America in 1975, as both the writer and artist of the story arc "Madbomb".
