The Chatham Cup is about the Chatham Cup that takes place annually in Chatham, Massachusetts

The Chatham cup, founded in 2008 and held annualy in late September in Chatham Massachusetts, is a competition that involves three traditional summer activities.

1. Golf 2. Various Beach Games 3. Beirut

The event has more than doubled since it's inception and is becoming a budding tradition in the Cape Cod community of Chatham. Participants come from all over the country in order to compete for their chance at the cup. In fact, international appeal has been generated with representation from Canada and Switzerland since 2008 and more recently, the United Kingdom.

The cup has a limit of 48 participants with the 48 participants being split into two teams of 24: "The Seersucker Suits" or "The Nantucket Whalebelts."

Teams of 24 are then divided into 12 teams of 2 on Friday night - no prior pairing is allowed. It can either be done randomly or teams of two have to have a combined golf score that adds up into a certain range. The teams compete for cash prizes and the "CHATHAM CUP", see below.

The Rules

Golf

· Foursomes and tee times determined by random draw; one SS and one NW team per foursome

· ‘Money Ball’ must be played at ALL TIMES. Anyone who finishes with their Money Ball receives 1 point for their team

· Best ball format: the best shot—as determined by the team—is used, and both players will then shoot their next shot from that location.

· Par 3 holes: Any shot, regardless of who hits it, can be played. A hole-in-one will count as 2 team points.

· Par 4/5 holes: One NON-PUTT per teammate must be played on every hole. Failure to do so results in a 1 STROKE PENALTY

· If a player is caught not playing their money ball there is a ONE SHOT PENALTY added to the total of that hole.

· In order to keep things moving, balls—specifically money balls—can be searched for for no more than 3 minutes. Please keep the round moving!

· Two individual point-scoring competitions:

o Long drive competition: 2008 Winner - Mike McCarthy

§ This competition takes place on the 13th hole—a long par 5.

§ Shots are deemed in play if they remain ON THE FAIRWAY (the first cut of rough DOES NOT COUNT).

§ A marker will be placed at the current long drive location; if you are in the first group please place the marker at the longest drive (again, in the fairway). If no shot ends up in the fairway place the marker on the tee box.

§ If your drive is further than the marker, move it to the location of your ball and write your name on the list.

§ The last group will pick up the marker; the last name on the list receives 1 Point for their team

o Closest to the pin competition: 2008 Winner - Carl "Desert Rose" Osterlof

§ This competition takes place on the 7th hole—a short par 3.

§ Shots are deemed in play if they remain ON THE GREEN (fringe DOES NOT count)—they must also be tee shots.

§ A marker will be placed at the current closest shot; if you are in the first group please place the marker at the location of the closest tee shot; if no shots remain on the green place the marker on the grass in the fringe for the next group.

§ If your shot is closer than the current marker spot (a tape measure will be provided) place the marker at your ball and write your name on the list.

§ The last group will pick up the marker; the last name on the list receives 1 Point for their team.

Washers

Format:

· 4 players, 2 per team, with 1 player from each team on each end (same format as horseshoes, 2 players per end)

Rules/Scoring:

· One player from each team on the same end will start with 3 washers.

· Players will toss 1 washer at a time, alternating for each toss.

· Scoring is as follows: Front Hole = 1 pt, Second Hole = 2 pts, Third Hole = 3 pts

· Each team can score per set of tosses, however, if a toss is topped by an opposing team members toss it cancels out the points of the first toss (for example Team A throws a 2 pt toss, then Team B scores a 2 pt toss on top. Team A does not get the 2 points as they have been "washed")

· First team to 15 points wins, or team with most points once time is up.

Polish Horseshoes

Format:

· 4 players, 2 per team, with both players from a team on the same end, the other team on the other side (SWITCH SIDES AT 7)

Rules/Scoring:

· One side will start with the two Frisbees; a coin flip will determine which team starts with the two Frisbees.

· A beverage must be in hand at all times during the game. Failure to do so will be penalized one point.

· When throwing the Frisbee, scoring can happen in the following ways:

o The receiving team fails to catch the Frisbee (ONE POINT)

o The Frisbee hits the stake (ONE POINT)

o The Frisbee hits the stake and the bottle drops to the ground (ONE POINT for hitting the stake; TWO POINTS for the bottle hitting the ground – the bottle can be caught, which would save the point). NOTE that there is no point for dropping the Frisbee when it hits the stake

o The Frisbee hits the bottle cleanly (THREE POINTS)

· First team to 15 points wins, or team with most points once time has expired.

Horseshoes

Format:

· 4 players, 2 per team, with 1 player from each team on each end

Rules/Scoring:

· One player from each team on the same end will start with 2 shoes.

· Players will alternate shots; a coin flip will determine who starts, and the team that scored last will lead off subsequent rounds.

· Scoring is as follows:

o Ringer – 3 Points

o Leaner – 2 Points

o Within a length of the shoe – 1 Point

· Closest to the stake wins—meaning the only points that count are the ones that aren’t tied or beaten by the other team. If there are multiple ringers the top shoe takes the points.

· First team to 15 points wins, or team with most points once time has expired.

Cornhole

Format:

· 4 players, 2 per team, with 1 player from each team on each end.

Rules/Scoring:

· One player from each team on the same end will start with 4 bags.

· Players will alternate shots; a coin flip will determine who starts, and the team that scored last will lead off subsequent rounds.

· Scoring is as follows:

o Bag remains on the board – 1 Point

o Bag goes through the hole – 2 Points

· All points count, so unlike horseshoes everything on the board or in the hole will count as points, regardless of team.

· First team to 15 points wins, or team with most points once time has expired.

Bocce

Format:

· 4 players, 2 per team. 4 bocce balls per team; each player receives 2 balls. A box in the sand will be laid out to give ‘boundaries’ for the game; only tosses inside the boundary will count.

Rules/Scoring:

· Coin flip will determine who starts with the ‘pallino’ (the small ball you are aiming for).

· The pallino must be tossed somewhere within the boundaries.

· Players throw from the same location; the team that threw the pallino will also lead off.

· Shots will alternate teams until all 8 balls are thrown. Closest to the pallino receives 1 point; the winning player will also throw the pallino and lead off the next round.

· First team to 15 points wins, or team with most points once time has expired.

Beirut

First round:

· 2 sets of Round Robin – 5 teams in each bracket

· Each team plays the other 4 teams once

· 6 cup; SAM house rules (no bring back; no rebuttals)

· Coin flip to start each game

· Top 4 teams advance to the bracket tournament (8 teams in total will advance…among the remaining 2 teams one person must be picked as designated driver to the Squire).

· Tiebreaker: Teams play a 3-cup game, one ball per team to start, first one to hit starts with the balls (shot DOES NOT count, it is merely for ‘first ball’ rights).

Bracket Tournament:

· 8 teams, random draw for seeding; all rounds will be 12 cup

· Coin flip to determine who starts

· Best of 3 in the quarterfinals; best of 3 in the semifinals; best of 5 in the finals
