the south maitland railway 10 class were ordered by SMR and made by beyer peacock .beyer peacock sugested a tank engine as it would be ready earlier and could go fast backwards as aposed to a tender engine which could not. They arrived beyween 1912 and 1925 with a total of 14 engines produced which served along side R-O-D's Kistons and NSWGR locomotives. Also made by beyer peacock was the SMR 15 class which were a copy of the NSWGR 30 Class No's 15 and 16 were biult in 1912 and No 29 in 1923 these were initialy used for passenger services but when that stopped they pulled coal for the rest of there life unfortunately all were scrapped in late 1973. i mentioned the kiston locomotives above but here is aome info about them kiston locos 9 10 and once 11 were tank locomotives anh had the appearence of a side tank version of an 2-8-0 R-O-D 9 and 10 ended their careers on the RVRS Hexam washery shunt and the short trip to stockrington clooiery. No 9 was originally called pelaw main and 10 was called richmond main No 11 was called Hexam but it unfortunately was scrapped both numbers 9 and 10 are on display at the richmond vale railway museum NSW along with 10 class locos 19,22,24,25 and 30 which was operational until a short time ago and R-O-D loco No 23 but none are operational at the moment. 10 class locos 17,18,20,23,26,27,28 and 31 are at the hunter valley railway trust at rothbury NSW. 10 and 18 are operational and 23 was but has been pulled apart for repairs i have mentioned the rod locos a few times but there is to much information about them so all i will say is that 521 locos were made and 4 romain 1 in london no23 ar RVRM as mentioned and Nos 20 and 24 are at dorrigo railway museum NSW the SMR were the last privately operated steam locomotive railway in australia but 4 locos were operational from hexam to richmond main up until 1987 but diesel locos stil go from newcastle to pelton colliery which is the last mine left on the south maitland railways once that closes south maitland railways will proberbly never operate again i have just found out that parts including cab and wheels off R-O-D 21 are at the richmond vale railway museum
