Gegana is part of Indonesian National Police that specialized on counter terrorism, EOD, CBR, intelligence, and anti anarchism
Gegana personels information usually keep in secrecy for their own safety.
History[edit]
Because of the hijacked incident in Australia, in 1974 Gegana was formed to anticipated terrorist act on airplanes inside Indonesia.
Gegana was formed since 1974, but the Departement of Defense acknowledged it on 1976. Eventhough Gegana is an elite unit inside the INP, it always changing it organisation structures.
First, all Gegana personels were selected from brimob personels who pass some qualifications required. this selcted few went to training in Klapadua, Ciputat, and Pelabuhan Ratu. Except for the EOD personels, they went to military EOD school in Cimahi, Bandung. After finish through training, Gegana personels placed in Petamburan Headquarters and was moved to Klapadua, Depok until now.
Organisation Structures[edit]
Gegana is lead by Police Grand Commissioner who assisted by few chief of staffs. And divided into 5 detachments that have their own speciality.
Gegana Detachments[edit]
Gegana's 5 different detachment are:
- Intelligence
- EOD
- Counter Terrorism
- Anti Anarchism
- CBR (chemical, bilogical, and Radioactive)
Personel[edit]
As a special units, in doing their task, Gegana usually move in small uits, not as many as conventional personel do. It is rarely Gegana moved in whole detachment.
Because of the specialty in every detachment, it is required to have a special recruits majoring in Electronics, communications, docters, chemical, biology, etc.
The presence of this special recruits makes all Gegana personels having more qualifications than before.
Insignia and Motto[edit]
The name Gegana was originated from the sanskrit word of Geghono which means Sky, it is suitable because the first use of Gegana was only to counter terrorism on airplane. On the day of gegana special black uniform ceremony, it was attetended by head of Germancounter terrorism police.
At first, Gegana insignia was not the black swallow like nowadays. but, it was a lighting, similiar to special force insignia. Late Chief of police General Anton Soedjarwo who changed the isgnia that represented strong physical and mental of all Gegana personels.
Gegana has a motto “ Setia, Tabah, Waspada” and “Pengabdian yang paling membahagiakan dalam hidup ini ialah apabila kita berbuat sesuatu bagi bangsa dan Negara yang menurut orang lain tidak mungkin mampu kita lakukan” that becomes daily guidances for all Gegana personels.
