Çetin Balanuye (born 16 August 1970) is a Turkish continental European philosopher and academic.

His main field of study is the idea of immanence in philosophy, immanence in the philosophical doctrines of Spinoza, Nietzsche and Deleuze and its ethical-political consequences. He is a professor at Akdeniz University, Department of Philosophy.[1]

Academic Background and Works

[edit]

He completed his undergraduate education in the Department of Educational Sciences, Psychological Counseling and Guidance at the Middle East Technical University, and his first master's degree in the field of sociology of education at the same university. He received a second master's degree in Philosophy of Education from the University of London.[2] He completed his doctorate in philosophy at Middle East Technical University (2006). He has been working as a faculty member in the Philosophy Department of Akdeniz University since 2007.

Balanuye is best known for his work on Spinoza.[3] "Spinoza: An Expression of Truth", published in 2012, is the first book in Turkish in which Spinoza's three main works (Ethics, Theological Political Treatise and Political Treatise) are explained together.[4] For the book, Ahmet İnam said, "We are faced with a highly sophisticated book that expresses Spinoza in a very broad horizon."[5] Balanuye's 2017 book "Where Does Spinoza's Joy Comes From? An Undeniable Philosophical Proposal" had 10 editions in the first five years following its publication, and it has been claimed that the book "has succeeded in reaching a wide audience with its fluent and cheerful language".[6],[7] The first book of the "Naturans triology" was published in 2020 with the title "Naturans I: Towards a New Ontology". Graham Harman, one of the founders of the Speculative Realism, said that Balanuye "proposed a new ontology" with this book, and Maurizio Ferraris, one of the representatives of the New Realism in Philosophy, said that "Balanuye opened a new path in philosophy".[8] The second book in the series (Naturans II: The New Ethics Politics) was published in 2022.

Çetin Balanuye is the editor-in-chief of the academic peer-reviewed journal "Ethos: Dialogues in Philosophy and Social Sciences" [ISSN 1309-1328], published since 2008.[9]
