I need to tell you

Why did you block this IP range over there for 1 year? How did you know that an IP evaded blocks? Here is the user I'm talking about: IP --76.20.110.116 (talk) 14:17, 3 June 2022 (UTC)

Hi there, and thanks for leaving me a message here with your questions. If you look at the user's last edit, it is the same edit as those made by the other range that I linked in the block summary. This user is known for doing this, and over many ranges and for quite some time - blocking the /64 range was necessary in order to prevent further abuse. Peter SamFan! Of course I remember you! I saw the notification email come in that you messaged me here, and I immediately recognized your username as someone I'm familiar with. ;-) Gosh, where do I begin? Life for me has changed quite a bit since 2016, actually, but nothing of note that's worth complaining about. ;-) Life for me right now is good, but also very busy for me as well. Being an adult and a member and contributor of society really has its obligations and responsibilities at times! Can I just turn the clock back to the year 2010? Back when I was in college, where I was my own adult, learning lots of cool things, but also had the time, freedom, and ability to have a great time without worrying about what I needed to do the next day or the day afterwards? ;-)
Many things around here have changed since 2016 as well. A lot of new faces have joined, a lot of familiar faces have (sadly) departed, and (of course) lots of crazy situations, ArbCom cases, and other what-not have gone down as well. ;-) But, hey, that's what happens... I'm still here (as well as many others), and I still perform my usual tasks and patrols for this project in order to stop vandalism, disruption, sock puppetry, and abuse (in fact, my involvement with these responsibilities have grown significantly since 2016 due to being appointed with additional high-level user roles).
What about you? What's been happening in your life as of late? I'm obviously curious to know about your six-year wikibreak, what happened, and what brought you back! Welcome back, by the way! Pull up a chair, take a seat, and stick around with us for awhile! We're definitely glad to have you back! The past six years have been quite good for me. (They passed by fast!) I'm a junior in high school now. I'm going to be getting ready for college soon. I'll remember your remark about having a great time without worrying about what I need to do the next day. (Hee-hee.) I can appreciate that as my life gets busier.
I used Wikipedia all the time over the past six years, but I only logged into this account once. I guess I was busy doing other things! Recently, I've been quite active on Discord; I'm an admin over there.
I returned because I missed it here. Wikipedia has a supportive community. Plus, I love being "behind the scenes." Also, I noticed a few of my online friends were editing Wikipedia as well.

Peter SamFan - It's all good; I had to take a three-year hiatus from Wikipedia back in 2009 because of the fact that my college studies and personal life back then were keeping me too busy in order to be able to spend time here. It was a bit different when I returned; I of course had that brief "out of touch" phase due to how much things had changed during the time that I had been away, but hey - that's normal and certainly expected, and it goes away very quickly once you start getting back into "the groove" of things on Wikipedia again. ;-)
Good Lord, you're making me feel old, my friend! I had a great time in High School, which (I am now realizing) was... wow, 15 years ago. I was a sophomore in High School when I first created this account on Wikipedia. Of course, at the time, I used it to add vandalism to the rival High School Wikipedia article, as well as engage in childish-level disruption and stupidity (in fact, you can look through my oldest contributions and you'll see them!). I still remember that day... I was sitting in a crappy wooden chair and using an old and slow computer at my High School library, and thought that what I was doing was creative and funny, and that the users reverting my edits and messaging me about my disruption were a "bunch of geeks with nothing better to do with their time". Man, oh man... I would have never had the thought, nor would I have ever even imagined or daydreamed for even a second that what I did that day and while bored at my High School library would lead me to be who I am on Wikipedia today, 15 years later, talking to you, and as an admin, functionary, and one of the top 50 most active English Wikipedia editors of all time. Man... It really just shows you how something that you might do today (even if it's insignificant, immature, childish, and stupid - such as what I was doing) could significantly alter your future, beliefs, passions, and how you spend your time. Had I not been in the mood to be a troll that day while in school, I surely wouldn't be here talking to you today! :-)
If I had the ability to give myself (who was 16 years old at the time) one serious piece of advice, I'd absolutely tell him (or... me) this: Don't waste your High School and your College years by not doing things that are productive and/or that make you happy. Those years are the best years that you'll have in life. Once you're done with High School and college (if you choose to go to one, of course), and when you begin what will be your life-long career spending 40 hours a week for the next 40+ years of your life doing, you'll realize that those years were the best years of your life before you had to "grow up" and "become an adult" and start contributing to society. I'm glad that I didn't waste those years, and I hope that you don't either! :-)

I'll definitely remember your advice! I'm lucky to have supportive family, friends, and teachers. I enjoy my life right now. It's definitely all too easy to spend my time unproductively.
I actually like reverting vandalism—it's actually exciting! ;) It makes me feel like I'm doing something helpful. I love "behind the scenes" work.
I also like talking with the other users (like you). The vibes are always positive. We're all working together to fulfill Jimbo Wales' goal—spreading the sum of human knowledge for free.
What are the forums where Wikipedia users chat? I would like to talk in some of those. Thanks.
Sometime, I might even significantly contribute to some articles. Some of the classical music-related ones could use a little beefing up.

Hi Assefuah! Don't feel bad because your draft page was rejected. If you were attempting to create a new article or page in good faith (which I believe you were doing), there's nothing to feel bad about. If you're feeling discouraged or disheartened after spending a lot of time trying to create this draft and because of the rejection, fear not! Wikipedia has a great tutorial page here for users who are trying to create one of their first articles. Take a look at that page and make use of its wizard so that you can avoid issues with your article subject and idea in the future and before you pour time into actually creating it.
Since you're brand new to Wikipedia, I highly recommend that you go through Wikipedia's getting started page and that you complete Wikipedia's new user tutorial before you make any more edits or take on any major tasks around here. They will provide you with many important walkthroughs, guides, interactive lessons, and other information that will familiarize you with our policies and guidelines, how Wikipedia works, how to navigate around the site, and how to find important locations and pages. Most users who take this advice and complete the tutorial tell me later that it was significantly helpful to them and saved them hours of time and frustration they would've experienced otherwise.

Question about phone numbers

Howdy, this is Tarlonniel of Discord, bugging an oversighter again, but with a general question and not any sensitive issue. I've often noticed phone numbers posted in the nooks and crannies of Wikipedia, some many years ago, some more recently - how urgent is it that these be vanished? If you run into any phone numbers or other personal identifiable information posted onto an article, definitely remove it and then report it to the oversight team for review and suppression. You can quickly and easily do this by emailing the oversight team. We definitely want to have a report filed - especially in regards to personal information like this being posted. Hi Rakizh123! Welcome to Wikipedia! I'm glad that you decided to join us, and I really hope that you'll take off your jacket, pull up a nice comfy chair, and that you'll stay with us for awhile! ;-)
Since you're brand new to Wikipedia, I highly recommend that you go through Wikipedia's getting started page and that you complete Wikipedia's new user tutorial before you make any large edits or take on any major tasks around here. These tutorial pages will provide you with many important walkthroughs, guides, interactive lessons, and other information that will familiarize you with our policies and guidelines, how Wikipedia works, how to navigate around the site, and how to find important locations and pages. Most users who take this advice, read through those pages, and complete the new user tutorial usually tell me later that they were significantly helpful to them, and saved them hours of time and frustration they would've experienced otherwise.

Hi there, and thanks for leaving me a message here and for your kind words about the mop that lives on my noggin. ;-) The place to locate an edit that was made to a specific page in the past is that page's edit history. To do this, simply scroll to the top of the page, and click on the "view history" tab. You'll then be navigated to a list of every single edit that has been made to that page. Each entry in that list represents a change that was made to that page, and will tell you when the change was made, who performed it, the summary that the user provided, and provide you with a link to view the exact changes that were made. There are great search tools that each edit history page will provide to you, or link you to. Please let me know if you have any more questions and I'll be happy to answer them and help you. No problem! :-) There actually are tools that will help. If you can remember the content that was added to (or removed from) the exact edit that you're looking for, you can use this tool. Also, moving forward, please take note and please remember to always report any edits or content that might need redaction or suppression (such as your report here) using private channels and communication methods (such as by emailing me here, or sending me a private message on IRC or Discord). Never use open channels or publicly-visible communication methods (such as anywhere on Wikipedia directly, or on this page) to report these violations. One important reason why you need to remember to do this is so that we draw as little attention toward the content as possible while it's under administrative or functionary review. To try and put things into perspective for you: This page, which is my user talk page, is currently on the watchlist of 1192 user accounts, and hence are all notified every time an edit or change is made to it. When a report like this is made here, where it's publicly viewable to anyone, you will almost always trigger the Streisand effect and cause a significant wave of attention to be drawn toward the content, as users will try and quickly navigate to the reported page and search its edit history so that they can view the violating content before they lose the ability to see it. ;-)

An anonymous user edited my talk page last month and since the edit was abusive, it triggered the filter and that is what was said although I don't know what LTA stands for. Many thanks! Hi Blanchey! I apologize for the delay responding to your question here. Life has been keeping me extremely busy over the last few months, and I'm finally catching up with all of the messages, pings, emails, and requests for help that I've received. :-) Gråbergs Gråa Sång pretty much hit the nail on the head. "LTA" stands for long-term abuse, which has a Wikipedia page that documents and lists users who have pretty much dedicated their time toward Wikipedia, but in a bad-faith disruptive and destructive manner. The abuse filter you likely saw was this one that I created (#53). One thing about LTA users who frequently engage in disruption, vandalism, personal attacks and harassment, and the making of threats is that they typically have a pattern or Modus operandi that they use to cause this disruption. These patterns can be easily be identified, added to this filter, and used to flag future edits by these abusers so that administrators and users can quickly identify and put a stop to it as soon as possible.
Looking at the edit that triggered this filter, it's obvious as to why. The IP range has been blocked for sock puppetry, and this will (hopefully) put a stop to future disruption. Since this other IP editor asked this question relating to this, would you take a look at this edit? Here it is:[[1]] Also, you should take at look at 205.155.237.189, 2600:1011:B00F:D1:4858:819E:FF80:90F2, 104.243.113.132, 24.234.55.138, and 172.85.211.18. Also, did you review edits of 204.129.232.191? They asked many unhelpful and disruptive questions and posts unrelated to the improvements of the talk page, such as What if 2020 was a person? and What if 2020 came to your house?. They cause disruption to the Wikipedia articles. What do you think of them? And did you blocked them all? Update: The IP users listed are all  Stale now, so there's no point in blocking them. The abuse filter that I updated was one of a handful of filters that I created and keep maintained and updated to this day - #53. For obvious reasons, the details, logs, and code for this abuse filter are marked as private and are not visible to the general public. Revision deletions - one or two lines over dates

Is there some reason as to how in some cases I see only one line over certain edits and on others there is two lines (see this page for an example). Iggy (Swan) (Contribs) 22:18, 22 June 2022 (UTC)

Hi Iggy the Swan! FormalDude is correct; a single strike-through means that the edit was revision-deleted and is visible to administrators, with the revision-deletion logs that are noting those changes being visible to everyone. A double strike-though means that the revision has been suppressed, with the logs and the revision only being visible to oversighters.
I was the user who initially proposed this change to the developers, and due to the fact that it was very difficult to see the difference between edits that were revision-deleted vs oversighted. However, it was implemented and deployed to production in a way that was different than I intended and desired. I only wanted the double strike-through vs single strike-though to be visible to oversighters; non-oversighters should only see a single strike-through - even if the revision is suppressed. Also, I don't know why this is, but after the double strike-through change was implemented and deployed, the color of the "double-strike" was subsequently changed from gray to black, which I also don't believe should be the case. The color and style between the two should be consistent, and making it black vs gray (as well as different for non-oversighters) just draws more attention to those edits than they should. I might go back and see why this color change was made, and propose that this style be only visible to oversighters and (if that is impossible) at least have the color changed back to being gray.

It's like when I once started a section "Faking signatures" where the second response I mistakenly used my own IP address which had to be removed and surpressed, I can see there are two lines on the date and time of the edits back on that day. I admitted I used the IP address as people would not think there are two registered users plus a random anonymous user participating where I knew it was me who used that address so you removed and surpressed that IP. Other people have done that accidentally as well (using an IP address) such as this case at the start of the Help with an edit section. Iggy (Swan) (Contribs) 21:21, 4 July 2022 (UTC)

Thanks for leaving me a message here with your question. :-) If you take a look at this Wikipedia policy page (specifically, this section of that page), you are required to provide a reference and an in-line citation to a reliable source when you add content to an article that is any of the following:
  • a quotation (you're directly quoting something that someone said, wrote, etc),
  • material whose verifiability has been challenged,
  • material that is likely to be challenged, and
  • any kind of contentious matter about living and recently deceased persons.
In addition to this requirement, I generally require myself (as a general personal rule) to support any kind of specific data or similar information that I add to any article with an in-line citation to a reliable source. Examples would be specific dates and times, measurements, computerized or computed data, lengths or heights, or other geological or factual information that is of a set length or date range. This way, I assure myself (and others) that the information that I'm adding is accurate. That's of course up to you, but if you do this (as well as comply with the requirements I listed above), you'll find adding content to be much easier for yourself, and you'll avoid many conflicts and possible disputes with other editors over accuracy and factual information. Before you add any kind of content listed above to any articles on Wikipedia, you'll need to familiarize yourself and become proficient with Wikipedia's verifiability policy, and Wikipedia's in-line citation content guidelines.

Hi ZePepper! Yes, that would make more sense to start the sentence with "on" instead of "in", since the date is specific to the day. Otherwise, "in" could be used if only the year or the year and month were specified (such as, "In 2015, the Supreme Court..." or "In March 2015, the Supreme Court..."). At least that's what I think. ;-) I performed a search for the specific sentence that you mentioned here, and it looks like that sentence has since been changed or removed. (talk page stalker) By "my photo", do you mean a photograph that you've uploaded to WP:COMMONS that you believe is somehow helpful to a template? Or do you mean "my headshot" or "my profile pic"?

Many Wikipedia users don't want photographs in templates, because photos take bandwidth that not all Wikipedia users have. This is a global encyclopedia. Many users live in parts of the world where every image file sucks up their allotment of bandwidth and means they can't get access to necessary informative content.

If you are seriously asking how to put your own personal photograph in a template, STOP IT. Wikipedia isn't social media. This is an encyclopedia. No one is going to hire you. No one is going to date you. You are in the wrong place. If you love knowledge for its own sake, we do, too, and we will help you.
