Beau Dunn (born Brittany Beau Dunn June 10, 1987 in Los Angeles, CA) is an American visual artist, model,[1] and actress [2] based in Los Angeles, CA. Dunn's artwork incorporates photography, paint and sculpture.[3] She is best known for her series of Barbie portraits, titled "Plastic",[4] in addition to her appearances in modeling campaigns for Smashbox Cosmetics [5] and as well as her roles in American television series', Entourage, Up All Night, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation and Melissa & Joey.[6]
Early life
[edit]Dunn was born in Los Angeles, California, the daughter of actress and model Laura Dunn[7] and Steven B. Dunn, CEO of Munchkin, Inc.[8][9] She is the older sister of Steven Winston Dunn and the granddaughter of venture capitalist David Dunn.[10] Dunn attended The Buckley School in Sherman Oaks, California and received a BA in studio art from Pepperdine University in Malibu, California in 2010.[11]
Career
[edit]Art
[edit]Dunn is a contemporary artist, known for her buzzworthy photography, sculptures and paintings inspired by the paradox of childhood innocence, materialism, and consumerism. Her series have included Barbie, Hello Kitty and gun inspired pieces. In 2010, Dunn had her first group exhibition titled, "eXist" at the Frederick R. Weisman Museum of Art in Malibu, California.[12]
In 2013, she released a series titled, "Plastic” featuring Barbie portraits at the Art of Elysium “Pieces of Heaven,” auction located at the ACE Museum in Los Angeles.[13] There, Dunn's Barbie's caught the eye of actor David Arquette whom joined in the bidding of one of the portraits in hopes to win it as a gift for his daughter, Coco.[14] Dunn's inspiration for her "Plastic" series and the development of her interest in art stemmed from her experience growing up in Los Angeles,"I got into art because of the whole idea of plastic people and materialism and how people in LA perceive themselves. It plays with what I grew up with and how they act,” said Dunn.[15]
Dunn has had exhibitions on both coasts showing in Los Angeles, New York City and Miami for Art Basel (2013). Her work has been featured at LACMA for the third iteration of, Around the Clock: DONUTS & CLOCKS with Dawn Kasper, a 24-hour durational performance installation which featured artist made donuts, karaoke, and an open call exhibition of 100 clocks during the entire 24 hour screening of Christian Marclay’s The Clock. Dunn's piece was a clock inspired by Hello Kitty.[16]
In March 2013, she collaborated with fellow Los Angeles-based artist Gregory Siff for a photo series called, "Beauty is Boring", shot by make-up artist and photographer Robin Black.[17] In November 2013 she loaned one of her Barbie portraits for a collaboration with This Means Mar.[18] The piece was on display at Lab Art Gallery in Los Angeles and was a part of Mars solo exhibition entitled, "I Crave Love".[19]
In January 2014 Dunn's Barbie series, "Plastic," was a part of a group exhibition titled, MIA in MIA at the Lyons Wier Gallery in New York City. Among the artists in the exhibition were, Greg Haberny, James Austin Murray, Aaron Nagel and Tim Okamura. The pieces were on display from January 9 - February 8, 2014.[20]
Modeling and acting
[edit]At 18 Dunn was signed to the prestigious Ford Modeling Agency after she was brought to their attention by BEBE designer Saundra Saulnier. She is represented internationally by New Zealand’s 62 Models and is currently signed to Photogenics Media.[21] Dunn has appeared in Vogue Italia, C Magazine, Angeleno Magazine,[22] Beverly Hills Lifestyle Magazine[23] and Genlux Magazine [24] among others. She has appeared on the cover of Santa Barbara Magazine [25] and is the current face of Smashbox Cosmetics.
After graduating from Pepperdine University in 2010 Dunn booked the television pilot Up All Night where she co-starred alongside Christina Applegate, Maya Rudolph and Will Arnett. Among her acting credits are roles in HBO’s Entourage, CBS’s CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, and ABC Family's Melissa & Joey.[26] Dunn has also been featured in commercials for Head & Shoulders and Axe Body Spray.
Designing
[edit]In 2013, with her younger brother Steven, Dunn created Plastic, a full lifestyle collection consisting of clothing, hats and accessories. The collection is a mix of Dunn's love of fashion and her brothers street-wear style. The two wanted to translate her art ideas onto wearable canvases and took inspiration from Dunn's childhood and life in Beverly Hills, CA.[27]
Cure Lipedema
[edit]Dunn is a World Wide Ambassador for Cure Lipedema [28] a charitable organization she co-founded with Dr. Karen Herbst. Cure Lipedema is committed to finding a cure for women suffering from Lipedema, a disorder of the adipose tissue. Dunn was diagnosed with Lipedema in late 2010. Up to 11% of women worldwide suffer from this disease and there is no known cure. Dunn's goal with Cure Lipedema is to spread awareness and get girls diagnosed earlier in addition to promoting research and to raise funds to find a cure.[29]
