Sangyup Lee

SangYup Lee is the head of the Hyundai Global Design Center and a Senior Vice President at Hyundai Motor Company. In this role, Mr. Lee is in charge of enhancing the design competitiveness of both the Hyundai and Genesis brands. Prior to this appointment, Lee worked for Bentley as its exterior designer.

Lee also served as Chief Exterior Designer of VW/Audi’s Advanced studio in California for Volkswagen AG prior to joining Hyundai and was also employed with General Motors Corporation. His design work includes the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro and Bentley's Bentayga SUV.

Biography

He was born in Ulsan, South Korea. He graduated Woosin High school from Ulsan. He graduated from Hongik University in 1994 and attended the Art Center College of Design in the United States from 1996 to 1998.

General Motors

He started his career as Exterior designer from General Motors from 1999. As an exterior designer, He participated in the multiple projects including Buick Velite concept, Chevrolet Corvette C6, Chevrolet corvette stingray concept and Chevrolet Camaro 5th generation.

Since 2006, He started to work at the Volkswagen as a Chief designer of exterior design. He particiapted in the multiple projects

After leaving Volkswagen group, He became a Head of exterior design from Bentley Motors. From Bentley Motors, he participated in multiple projects including Bentley flyingspur and Bentley EXP 10 speed 6 concept.

Design Philosophy

He said that car design is not only about making and presenting a beautiful car, but also thinking about the various values ​​that a car can give, thinking about the connection with future cars, and thinking about the lifestyle from the customer's point of view. He also said that designing a car is designing the look of the city. Just as Peugeot, Citroën, and Renault cars on the road create the feeling of Paris, France, Hyundai Motor Company is responsible to create the beautiful city of Seoul.
