Edzell Golf Club lies at the gateway to the Grampian Mountains in the foothills of the Angus Glens. The mountains form a backdrop to the course, located in the village of Edzell, midway between the cities of Dundee and Aberdeen. Although originally heathland in nature, a major tree-planting programme started in the 1960s has brought a parkland air to the picturesque and peaceful setting^[1].

The course has been termed ‘a hidden gem’ by Golf Monthly, a leading consumer golf publication^[2]. Not only is the course seen to be a quality venue, good enough to have hosted junior Scottish amateur events, i In addition to the 18 and 9 hole courses, which can be played in any combination, the club boasts a driving range.

History

The original course was laid out in 1895 by Bob Simpson, top golf course architect of his day. In 1933/34 the course was re-designed on recommendations made by the famous James Braid and remains virtually unchanged to this day. Today the course is situated in some 128 acres and has been complemented with the addition of the 9 hole West Water course in 2001^[3].

Club Professional

The professional, Alastair Webster, is well known and his achievements. He won the Scottish Boys Strokeplay Championship on two occasions^[4] and represented Scotland at boy, youth and senior level^[5]. Alastair also represented Great Britain at youth level for 3 consecutive years. As a professional, representing Edzell, Alastair won the British Club Professionals Championship^[6] and represented Great Britain and Europe in the PGA Cup at Kiawah Island in USA. He also represented Scotland at the European Team Championships on three occasions as well as the UK & Ireland in the ‘mini’ Ryder Cup and once playing all 4 rounds of a (British) Open Championship. He has also qualified for, and played in, the last two British Seniors Open Championships.

Edzell Old Course

Designed by top golfer architect Bob Simpson, the 18-hole par 71 course at The Edzell Golf Club was originally laid out in 1895 and amended some thirty-none years later in line with recommendations from the legendary James Braid. With a virtually unchanged layout it is now complemented by a 9-hole West Water Course which was brought into play in 2001.

West Water Course

The 9 hole West Water course was designed by Graeme Webster and was opened in 2001. This par 32 layout is predominantly flat parkland and all fairways are tree-lined. The 7th and 8th holes border the West Water and are particularly scenic. ^[7]

Facilities

Catering and bar facilities to provide guest and members with meals and refreshments on site as available as well as hotels and guest houses and even a country house retreat (the Burn) for parties of almost almost any size.
