From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

English Martial Arts is a collective term used to describe the indigenous martial arts of England. These arts date back hundreds of years and cover a large number of different styles. The oldest English Martial Art currently know about is that of the Two Handed Sword. There are three surviving texts from the middle ages describing the art of the Two Handed Sword and these texts have been studied and interpretations of the art contained within them are practiced by a number of groups and societies around the world.

Other examples of English Martial Arts are the rapier system described by Joseph Swetnam and the pugilistic style of such boxers as Daniel Mendoza.

A number of styles have a common theme allowing them to be combined into one art such as George Silver's weapons system and Sir Thomas Parkyns's wrestling. A small number of organisations such as [1] and the [2] actively teach combined English Martial Arts under the auspices of a single system
