Sri Sacchidananda Bharati Mahaswami

Sri Sacchidananda Bharati Mahaswami (25-05-1953 – 23-02-2013) was the eighteenth pontiff of Sri Sringeri Shivaganga Sharada Peetham from 1982 to 2013[1]. He was acknowledged as 'Anushtaana Chakravarthy'[2] and was fondly called 'Mazhai Swami' by his devotees.

Early life[edit]

Sri Sacchidananda Bharati Mahaswami (Poorvashrama name, Sri Seetharama Sharma), was the son of Veda Brahmasri T. S. Venkatasubbaiah and Smt. T. V. Subbalakshmamma and was born on Vyshaka Shukla Dwadashi of Vijayanama Samvatsara[2] (25-05-1953). His parents were ardent devotees of Sri Rama; prayers to Sri Rama had borne fruit and they therefore named him such. Sri Seetharama Sharma graduated in Science and went on to complete his Degree in Law. However his keen interest in spirituality (Atma Vidya) led him to Sadvidya Sanjeevini Samskrutha Mahapaatashala, Sringeri where he studied the Vedas and Sanskrit. The exalted Vedic cultural ambience at home could only have led him to the study of Atma Vidya (Self Knowledge). Like his mother, he was not only soft-spoken and pleasant by nature but was involved in unswerving devotion to Sri Rama. He was specially devoted to His Holiness Sri Sri Abhinava Vidyatirtha Mahaswami. His Holiness took keen interest in mentoring this young seeker-disciple in the nuances of Sanaatana Dharma. He was a major influence in bringing out the Saint in him.

Sanyasa[edit]

When the 17th pontiff of Sri Sringeri Shivaganga Sharada Peetham, Sri Sri Vishweshwarananda Bharati Mahaswami attained Mahasamadhi in 1982, he had already chosen his successor, a young Brahmachari by name Sri Seetharama Sharma. He later came to be known as “Sri Sacchidananda Bharathi” and went on to become the Peetaadipathi of Sri Sringeri Shivaganga Sharada Peetham[2], 35 km away from Bengaluru. It was in 1982 when he was studying in Sringeri that he was hurriedly summoned to Bengaluru. A sequence of ensuing events and the Will of the Guru anointed him as Peetaadipathi in 1982.[2]

Sainthood[edit]

He practised and articulated the essence of Sanatana Dharma in his quiet, lucid and tranquil manner. He was much devoted to His Holiness Sri Sri Abhinava Vidyatirtha Mahaswami. Sri Sri Bharati Tirtha Mahaswami always had special affection and referred to him as 'Anushtaana Chakravarthy'.[2] He embodied the knowledge, compassion and peace that Sri Rama epitomised. His silent communion with the trees, animals and the cows at the Peetham's Goshala; their reaction to him was only to be seen to be believed. Ardent devotees who had been in his presence note that his Anushtaana revolved in and around Silence, his Knowledge led those sincere ones to abide in that Silence and he remains in the heart of those sincere ones, for Peace, Harmony and Bliss to prevail by virtue.[3]
