'George E. Lord' (November 18, 1901 – April 25, 1963) was an American government official serving the US Department of Agricultures Cooperative Extension Service in both federal and state capacities.

Early life and career

Lord was born in West Lebanon, Maine, the son of Edgar B. and Jennie (Sherman) Lord. He graduated from the University of Maine in 1924 with a degree in Agronomy and received his degree in Public Administration from Harvard University in 1948.

Lord’s 37 year career with Cooperate Extension Service began in 1925 as a county agent. In 1930 he was appointed as a county agent leader for the University of Maine. He quickly rose to assistant director in 1933 and then associate director from 1950 to 1957. He became Director of the Maine Extension Service from 1957 to his retirement in December 1962. Soon after retirement, Lord was called to serve on Extension Service, Washington, D.C. as an area program leader.

In 1952 he helped develop methods of increasing food production in the Marshall Plan countries of western Europe, serving in France, Italy, Belgium, Austria and the Netherlands. In 1958, Lord was presented the Superior Service Award from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the nation’s highest agricultural award.

He served on numerous federal and state agricultural committees including: chairman of the Northeastern Section of Extension Directors, 1936; chairman of the Maine Farm Home and Safety Council, 1955; secretary of the National Extension Committee on Organization and Policy, 1958; chairman of the Advisory Board of National Agriculture Extension Center for Advanced Study, 1961;
