Dbrand Inc. (stylized as dbrand) is a consumer electronics accessory company based in Toronto, Canada, known for their decal skins and cases.
History
[edit]dbrand was founded in 2011 in Toronto, Canada.[1]
Products
[edit]The company’s very first product was an iPhone 4 skin sans Apple logo, and since then they’ve expanded to include skins, cases, and screen protectors for iPads, MacBooks, Samsung Galaxy phones, Valve’s Steam Deck, the rabbit r1 AI companion, and gaming consoles such as the Xbox Series X and Series S and Nintendo Switch.
One of their most popular products is the “Killswitch” case for the Steam Deck and the ASUS ROG Ally, with the latter having been an official collaboration between dbrand and the ASUS ROG engineering team. The case aims to make both devices more rugged and drop-resistant, along with adding a kickstand to the back that can also hold up to four microSD cards. The Steam Deck variant’s kickstand can be swapped out for a universal mounting mechanism to attach a battery pack, external hard drive, etc.
dbrand began selling matte black faceplates, dubbed “Darkplates,” for the PlayStation 5 in February 2021. As Sony took legal action against a previous company who attempted to do this, they jokingly challenged Sony to "Go ahead, sue us".[2] Ironically, Sony didn’t receive it as a joke. They managed to successfully serve dbrand a cease and desist, forcing them to stop selling Darkplates. They quickly got to work on the redesigned Darkplates 2.0, releasing around December of the same year, referred to as “Not Illegal” by the company. It features multiple colorways, including translucent ones reminiscent of the Nintendo 64, light diffusers that attach to the console’s light bar to change its colors, and an added spot for a thermal passthrough, allowing the console to run slightly cooler.
Marketing
[edit]dbrand is known for their unique marketing style. The company often refers to itself as being run by robots, and is often humorous or snarky on their social media pages.[1][3]
