Highgate Archway[edit]

Highgate Archway also known as Archway Bridge, The Archway and Suicide Bridge but officially the Hornsey Lane Bridge, is a bridge in Archway, London.

Name[edit]

Highgate Archway is named after the place it joined to before the area became known as Archway. Highgate was a village that was so called as it was a toll on one of the highest points in London, to travellers traversing the Bishop of London's road across his park. This place was recorded as Heghgate in 1354.^[1]

Previous archways

In 1884, the first cable-hauled tramway in Europe opened between Archway Tavern and Highgate Village up an 1 in 11 gradient up Highgate Hill. This was operated by Steep Grade Tramways and Works Company Ltd. The cars moved y having a gripper attached to a cable that ran in a conduit between the rails. The company over its history faced two closures and was taken over by the London Cable Company in 1909, when the tramway closed for electrification. ^[2]

Another tramway ran from Archway Tavern to City Bounday (Moorgate).^[2]
