Anthony Mugisha, (born circa 1965) is a Ugandan veterinarian, academic and the current deputy vice chancellor of Makerere University, responsible for finance and administration, effective 21 May 2024.[1]

Background and education[edit]

He is a Ugandan national. He traces his ancestry to Uganda's Western Region. He studied at Makerere University, Uganda's oldest and largest public university, graduating with a Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine degree.[2]

His second degree, a Master of Science in International Animal Health was awarded by the University of Edinburgh in Scotland, United Kingdom. He holds a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Agricultural Economics, awarded by the University of Reading, also in the United Kingdom. His fourth degree in a Master of Business Administration obtained from the Eastern and Southern African Management Institute (ESAMI), in Arusha, Tanzania.[2]

Career[edit]

The position of "Deputy Vice Chancellor for Administration and Finance" at Makerere University fell vacant in 2017, when Professor Barnabas Nawangwe was appointed Vice-Chancellor. The University Chancellor Ezra Suruma appointed Professor William Bazeyo, previously the Dean of the Makerere University School of Public Health, in acting capacity. In 2018, Professor Bazeyo was appointed on a permanent basis after beating Professor Mugisha. Mugisha challenged this appointment in court.[3]

Mugisha prevailed in court in June 2019. However, Professor Bazeyo was re-appointed as Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor soon after. In October 2020, Bazeyo withdrew his candidature amidst questions about his academic credentials. Dr. Josephine Nabukenya and later Professor Henry Alinaitwe served as acting Deputy Vice-Chancellors thereafter.[3]

In 2024, the Search Committee received six initial applications for the position. However, only three, met the minimum qualifications and proceeded to face-to-face interviews and public presentations. These are Professor Henry Arinaitwe, Associate Professor James Bruce Kirenga and Professor Anthony Mugisha. "The University Senate has recommended the three candidates to the University Council for approval".[3]
