Family, Friends and Allies

[edit]

The century drought came to an end in the third season when he further raised the bar of his performance scoring 762 runs in 7 tests at an avg. of 62.66 that included four hundreds and one fifty. The first of those four hundred came on the Zimbabwe tour. He top scored in both the innings against Zimbabwe scoring 118 and 44 runs respectively. Despite his performance, India lost the only Test.[citation needed]

Next up was a tour to New Zealand. The tour that started with the first duck of his career in the first inning of the Second Test(First Test having been abandoned without a ball bowled) ended with twin hundreds in each innings of the Third Test at Hamilton. He scored 190 and 103 not out in first and second inning respectively. This made Dravid the third Indian batsman, after Vijay Hazare and Sunil Gavaskar, to score a century in both innings of a Test match.[30][31] The match ended in a draw.

Later that month, India played a two Test home series against Pakistan. Dravid didn't do much with the bat in the series. India lost the First Test but won the Second Test at Delhi riding on Kumble's historic 10 wicket haul. Dravid played his part in the 10 wicket haul by taking a catch to dismiss Mushtaq Ahmed.

Supporting characters

Family

[edit]

+ Dhruva has a large range of supporting characters who have played significant roles in his story arcs, some more than others. While some define the character of Super Commando Dhruva itself, other have played significant role in defining the story arcs they have been part of. After the death of Dhruva' parents, I. G. Rajan Mehra adopted him. I. G. Rajan has been a constant presence in Dhruva titles and has been very useful not only as the chief of police but also as a father-figure and a constant source of inspiration. When A supervilian Alchemist almost forced Dhruva into retirement by endangering his family's life by targetting Rajan Mehra and Dhruva's sister Shweta, it was Dhruva's father who motivated him to keep going. − Dhruva is the biological son of Shyam and Radha who were trapeze artists. After their death, he was adopted by I.G. Rajan Mehra, an honest police officer and Mrs. Rajni Mehra. Dhruva's foster parents also have a daughter Shweta. In the 'Ateet series, it was revealed that Dhruva has a family in France comprising his Grandfather, Uncle, Aunt Marcell and a cousin brother Luka. Dhruva's Aunt and Luka attacked his father, causing him to lose his memory. They also tried to kill Dhruva but failed. Luka had told Dhruva that his father was accused of the murder of a police officer in France. Dhruva went to France and with the help of the slain police officer's daughter Vera, investigates and eventually clears up his father's name.       −

  • Chandika- Shweta is the only daughter of police officer I.G. Rajan. She is an electronics and computer expert, who designs gadgets for herself and Dhruva. She is one of the many allies Dhruva has. As Chandika, she wears a purple costume with a blonde wig. While Dhruva suspects that Shweta is Chandika, she has managed to keep her identity a secret. Chandika has no superpowers. being trained by Dhruva, she too is an expert in hand to hand combat. She uses self-created gadgets.

+ Dhruva's Commando force, a team of 3 trained commandos (Peter Massy, Karim Shah and Renu) has been another important support for him in his fight. Dhananjay, the descendent of Gods, is Dhruva's best friend who not only provided him with the power to breathe under water but is also ready to help whenever Dhruva needs him and vice versa. But amongst a long list of supporting characters in Dhruva series, the most important character has been Shweta, Dhruva's sister. She has been the strongest pillar of support in Dhruva's constant battle against evil on many levels. As a little sister, she engages with Dhruva in funny sibling banter, cheers him up and makes sure he never feels sad or misses his biological family. As a budding scientist, she constantly provides Dhruva with innovative gadgets that prove very helpful to Dhruva during his fights. But the highest level of support she provides is in the form of Chandika, a blonde super heroine, her alter ego. Chandika ha inherited her brother's fighting style. Like Dhruva, she too depends on brains more than brawn as well as her self invented gadgets. She is always there to help Dhruva whenever he is in danger. Dhruva who is very protective about her sister, under strong suspicion that Shweta is Infact chandika, often reprimands her for putting her life in danger. Although Shweta somehow always comes out clean proving that she is not chandika. Natasha is the only person who knows Chandika's true identity. Shweta eventually went to London in 2007 "Makadjaal" series to pursue her further studies. In Nagayana, when Shweta was presumably dead, although later revived, Natasha kept Chandika alive by donning her costume.     −

  • Commander Natasha (love interest / wife)- Commander Natasha, is the daughter of his arch enemy Grand Master Robo. Loosely resembling parts of the Batman series involving Ra's al Ghul and his daughter Talia al Ghul, while Dhruva and Natasha appear to love each other, they constantly battle each other due to her return to her father's empire. However, in the parallel Nagayan series, they are depicted as married with two children (Rishi and Jalaj), though estranged.

+ Dhruva has had quite a few love interests that include Natasha, Richa and Sabby. Natasha is Dhruva's arch enemy Grand Master Robo's daughter. While Natasha and Dhruva's love is mutual, Richa and Sabby's love is more one sided. Sabby is the daughter of another don Abbu Salem. She never reappeared since her first appearance in 'Sarvanash'. On the other hand, Richa has been integral part of Dhruva's storyline ever since her first appearance. As Richa, she has been Dhruva's best friend and as her alter ego Black Cat, a lethal super heroine with killer instincts, though initially rogue who later turned to the good side, she has been a partner and helper in many of Dhruva's fights. More so since Chandika (Shweta) has gone out of India to pursue her studies. In alternate universe shown in Nagayana series, Natasha has been revealed to be the lawfully wedded wife of Dhruva. Both have a conceived a kid out of their marriage as well. Richa too bears Dhruva's child though as she pointed out, Dhruva never cheated on Natasha as his and Richa's baby was borne out of IVF technique.     −

  • Rishi- Son of Dhruva and Richa who is brought up by Dhruva and Natasha without the latter's knowledge that he is not her own son. Has secretly learnt a lot of tricks and has inherited a sharp brain from his father.

+ Other significant supporting characters in Dhruva series include, Jingalu, a yeti; Kirigi, a yogi ninja fighter; Lori, an exorcist; Vanputra, a jungle residing guy whose friends are plants in contrast to Dhruva whose friends are animals; Barfmanav; Saamri, the keeper of Jwalok, a secret city located inside a volcano; Vera Vicet, a French police officer who initially tried to kill Dhruva thinking that his biological father had killed his father but eventually realises the truth and becomes his ally and Nakshatra, a mirror image of Dhruva who like Dhruva was born and brought up in a circus and has pretty much same abilities that Dhruva has. As opposed to Vera, Nakshatra tried to kill Dhruva's father I. G. Rajan believing that he had killed his father in a fake encounter but upon realising he truth, he surrenders to police, and after serving his jail sentence, he eventually became Dhruva's friend. In Nagayana, Nakshatra has been shown to be Shweta's love interest.     −

  • Jalaj- The son of Dhruva and Natasha who was treacherously taken away from them by Natasha's father ROBO. He has inherited the skills of his parents.

+ Dhruva has been a member of superhero team 'Brahmand Rakshak'. Dhruva has often teamed up with other superheroes, most frequently with Nagraj and occasionally with Doga. While Nagraj and Dhruva have grown to become thick of friends over the years, Dhruva-Doga relationship is a bit more tense because of differring moral codes and sense of justice of the two heroes.     −

Friends

[edit]

In a stark contrast to his Test career, Dravid had to struggle a lot to make a mark in the ODIs.[32] Between his ODI debut in April 1996 and the end of 1998 calendar year, Dravid regularly found himself in and out of the ODI team.[33]

Despite his initial struggle in ODIs, there were quite a few highlights as well. Dravid tasted first success of his ODI career in the 1996 'Friendship' Cup against Pakistan in the tough conditions of Toronto.[34] He emerged as the highest scorer of the series with 220 runs in five matches at an average of 44.00 and a strike rate of 68.53.[35] He won his first ODI Man of the Match award for the 46 runs scored in the low scoring third game of the series.[36] He top scored for India in the Standard Bank International One-Day Series 1996/97 in South Africa with 280 runs from eight games at an average of 35.00 and a strike rate of 60.73,[37] the highlight being a Man of the Match award winning performance (84 runs, one catch) in the Final of the series that came in a losing cause.[38] He was the second highest run scorer for India in the four-match bilateral ODI series in the West Indies in 1996/97 with 121 runs at an average of 40.33 and a strike rate of 57.61.[39]

Dravid's maiden ODI hundred came in a losing cause in the 1997 Pepsi Independence Cup against Pakistan in Chennai.[40][41] Dravid top scored for India in the quadrangular event with 189 runs from three games at an average of 94.50 and a strike rate of 75.60 however, India failed to qualify for the Final of the series.[42][43]

However, Dravid's achievements in the ODIs were dwarfed by his failures in the shorter format of the game. 14 runs from two games in the 1996 Pepsi Sharjah Cup; 20 runs from two innings in Singer World series; 65 runs from four innings in the 1997 'Friendship' Cup; 88 runs from four games in the 1998 Coca-Cola Triangular series including a 22-ball five runs and a 21-ball one run innings, both coming against Bangladesh; 32 runs from four games in the 1998 'Friendship' Cup;[44] a slew of such poor performances often forced him to the sidelines of the India ODI squad. By the end of 1998, Dravid had scored 1709 runs in 65 ODIs at a humble average of 31.64 with a poor strike rate of 63.48.

  • Chandakaal- Chandakaal wants to rule the universe. He is the last Rakshas left on Earth. Chandakaal has a close resemblance to the artistic representations of the devil. He carries a magic wand which is the source of all his powers.
  • Mahamanav- Mahamanav represents the next race of humans. His origin is not very clear but it is known that he grew in the southern hemisphere and because of longer days and nights and natural phenomenon, his evolution was faster than homo sapiens and he developed many superhuman abilities. His telepathic and mind control abilities are notably strong, which he uses for weather manipulation and to project objects of any shape. Since he has grown in the sub zero climate of Antarctica, he is not able to adapt to heat. If exposed to too much heat, his body automatically goes into hibernation. Since Mahamanav generates an active force field before his hibernation, he is unharmed in his sleep.
  • Bauna Vaman- Bauna and Vaman are Hindi and Sanskrit terms respectively for a dwarf. He is a mechanical buff. a Vaaman specialises in creating remote-controlled mechanical bugs and gadgets.
  • Dhwaniraj- Dhwaniraj was originally a professor researching sound waves, who felt he could get richer by using the findings of his research for crime. Dhwaniraj has a sonic device that he wears on his hands, which is his primary weapon. He first appeared in "Aawaz ki tabahi". Since sound waves cannot travel through vacuum, his powers are of no use in vacuum. This weakness was spotted and leveraged by Dhruva in one of the comics.
  • Doctor Virus- A degenerated virus expert, Dr. Virus uses his knowledge to develop various germs and viruses to cause destruction. Dr. Virus is capable of creating genetically engineered beings. Micro-biology and genetic science is his forte.
