Paola Picotti is an Italian/Swiss researcher and a professor at the Institute of Molecular Systems Biology at ETH Zurich studying molecular bases of protein aggregation diseases. She is the winner of 2019 EMBO gold medal for her breakthrough research in the mass spectrometry and targeted proteomics.[1][2][3] Picotti's research focuses on development of mass spectrometry-based structural and chemical methods to analyse protein conformational changes to be used in studying development and progression of neurodegenerative diseases.[4][5]

Education

[edit]

Picotti received her Masters degree in Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Technologies from the University of Padua, Italy in 2001 (summa cum laude). In 2006 she moved on to do a PhD in the team of Prof Angelo Fontana. Since her PhD work she she maintains her interest in tackling biological mechanisms of protein amyloid fibrillogenesis.[6]

Career

[edit]

Picottis' career is closely connected to the ETH Zurich. In 2007 Picotti received a Marie Curie Intraeuropean fellowship to work in the group of Prof Ruedi Aebersold, where she developed many new experimental and analytical methods for targeted proteomics.[7][8] In 2011 she started her own research group at the ETH Institute of Biochemistry and was appointed an Assistant Professor. In 2014 Piccotti was awarded an ERC starting grant and in 2016 EMBO Young Investigator Award. Picotti is also a scientific advisor for Biognosys - proteomics quantification company.[9]

Professional awards

[edit]
  • Juan Pablo Albar “Protein Pioneer” Award, European Proteome Organization (2018)
  • Friedrich-Miescher Award (2018)
  • Robert J. Cotter Award, American Human Proteome Organization (2016)
  • SGMS Award for independent research in the field of mass spectrometry (2016)
  • “Top 40 under 40” Power List, The Analytical Scientist (2014)
