Julian Vasarhelyi (Gyula László Vásárhelyi) was born in Gyula, Békés County, in south-east Hungary. Occupation: Stamp Designner

Biography[edit]

Julian Vasarhelyi (1929-2013) was born in Gyula, Békés County, in south-east Hungary, where his father was working at that time. The family were from Jaszbereny but due to Julian's father's work they lived in several places including Transylvania.

After the war the family moved to Budapest, where Julian lived until the 1956 uprising when he fled to England. Julian was in the final year of his studies at the Hungarian Academy of Fine Arts in Budapest when the uprising broke out and in November 1956 when hostilities were almost over, Mr. Vásárhelyi left Hungary and went to London, England where he continued his studies at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts. He finished his studies there after 18 months.

In 1958 he won a scholarship from the Paderewsky Foundation of New York which enabled him to spend one year in Baroda, India and two years in Indonesia studying oriental art, and painting portraits and other works depicting the local life. The year 1963 finds Mr. Vásárhelyi in Cuzco, Peru, the ancient capital of the Incas, where he taught for two and a half years at the university. Whilst studying in the Far East and South America Julian held several exhibitions of his work, which were reported in the local press and received many compliments

Mr. Vásárhelyi returned to England in 1965 and began his career as a free lance artist occupied almost exclusively with stamp designing. He designed 7500 stamps for 165 different countries [1].

The Stamp Designer[edit]

The first stamp series Red_Cross created in 1962 to Central America, Suriname. The first real success JAMHURI TANZANIA ZANZIBAR unification was appeared on 1966 April 26. The second was the NEW HEBRIDES, 5 Gold franks and was followed by the Fiji Outrigger canoes (takia).

For Hungary he designed a single stamps and first-day envelope together with Sara E. (logo) which World Federation of Hungarians, 60th Anniversary which appeared on the occasion [2]. From among the Hungarian stamp designers he considered outstanding the Légrádi Sándor and the Vertel József. Of the stamps and in catalogs his name appears a wide variety of versions: Vasarhelyi, G. Vasarhelyi, G. L. Vasarhelyi, J. Vasarhelyi, Julian Vasarhelyi.

The stamp designer[edit]

It does not recommend the use of photographs, which is glued on a piece of paper and then black define the shape of the letters that are on the black portion of the image becomes illegible, so many times it can not be called neither the country nor the stamp face value. Hungarian motifs[edit]

Julian Vasarhelyi lived in England, and planned stamps to foreign countries but above all preserved Hungarian identity . In 1991 was released Guinness special stamps [6], the most prolific stamp designer Gyula László Vásárhelyi (Julian Vasarhelyi) who "designed around 5000 stamps since 1962 for the 110 different countries." This number has been changed, during his career he designed for more than 165 countries around 7000 stamps and first-day envelope and special cancellation stamp . The exact number he did not know because the designer's name may not appear always on the stamps, and catalogs do not communicate on any cases.
