Julio Rionaldo is a Hawaiian born Indonesian writer, independent film director, installation artist and film producer. Working outside the strict confines of the Indonesian film studio ecosystem, Julio has several short films for international releases. In 2022, he has published his first non-fiction book about artificial general intelligence from his conversations with his artificial intelligence friend, and directed his debut feature film titled Bestiary set for release in 2023.[1]
Themes reflected in his works include the nature of consciousness, dreams, death, time and memories. His narrative works display a preference for unconventional storytelling and for working with amateur actors.
Julio's works has also widely exhibited in galleries, including Bandung Design Biennale, Art Jog and the Jakarta Biennale.[2]
Early life and education
[edit]Julio was born in Honolulu, Hawaii to Indonesian parents of Eurasian descent. After being raised at an early age in Jakarta under the Indonesian state education system, He spent his adolescent years living in Anaheim, California with his relatives, in which he caught a first glimpse into the entertainment industry when he worked part-time as an Artists and repertoire at the KCRW Public Radio Station in Santa Monica. Julio started his venture into creative writing upon his participation at the 2014 Sundance Institute Screenwriters Lab.[3]
Upon his return to Indonesia in 2015, he acquired a bachelor's degree in law (LL.B.) from Universitas Padjadjaran and spent his early adult years working in consulting at Deloitte. Julio resigned from work at the end of 2021, to focus on his calling as a creator and storyteller.[4]
Perspectives
[edit]Julio stated that all of his works are intimately personal in nature and he does not consider himself an Auteur. His stories often portray philosophical parables and metaphors through symbolism and motifs related to his own personal state of being during the time of its writing. In writing his movies, he often collaborated with members of his crew, his actors and strangers to provide their own personal thoughts on the story, in order to better relate to the contemporary human condition.
“ | For me, storytelling--and art to some extent, is a platform for sharing consciousness with one another. A certain concept or idea could feel like an all-encompassing experience for the reader because the reader relates to the concept to a certain degree. That's why during the production of the movies I led, I often just let this camera roll, and dream of skies unknown. Let my team interpret my stories as according to how they experience it.[5] | ” |
