L'elan Vital is an American art rock or post-rock band from Boulder, Colorado. Recognized for bringing a comedic nature to post-rock[1] the band has released 1 studio album and 1 EP since forming in 2004. While L'elan Vital has officially retired as a performing band, they are currently in production of their 2nd and reportedly final studio album. [2]

History[edit]

The band began writing music and recorded their demo EP "God is Pissed. Good thing She doesn't Exist" in late 2004. Releasing their debut album "The Wink & The Gun" in 2008,[3] the band intentionally placed the album on Torrent websites to proliferate downloads and viral spread. The band has hosted the album as a free download as well. The band released an intricately comical and sexually daring music video for their song "Pop that collar Chad" in 2008 [4]. The band played their final concert in June 2009. Despite retiring, the band has recorded material for their 2nd album "Our 2nd & Final Album" which is due to be released in 2010.[5]

Media Placement[edit]

In 2010, the soccer documentary "Pelada" (2010) produced by Ryan White, featured two songs "Intolerance Inherent" and "Bullets are such small things" from L'elan Vital's debut "The Wink & The Gun" and "I'm a Bleeding Heart, Tree Hugging, Godless, Hippie, Queer, Liberal" from L'elan Vital's forthcoming album "Our 2nd & Final Album."[6] In 2008, the band's song "Endlessly Indebted" was chosen by Filter Magazine to be published in the Landmark Theaters Winter CD sampler. Their song "Bullets are such small things" was selected to open the Sims Snowboarding film "Interference" in 2008.[7] 303 Magazine featured L'elan Vital with an article "L'elan Vital: May the LIfe Force be with you" in the April 2009 issue.

Formation[edit]

The group was initially formed over internet classified ads while founder Brandon Bosch (formerly of Circle A, hallow, The Design) was studying abroad in Spain. Bosch originally met guitarist Andy Berkeland at a Sigur Rós show in 2002 where the two discussed starting a group. Bosch found pianist/guitarist Sam (Wise) Haycraft playing classical piano at a party. Violinist Sam Gathman was found on a Facebook search for "violin."
